Magnets?

Posted by schleprock on March 2, 2013, at 20:17:06

I purchased a kind of model-type item on Ebay and the seller included these magnets that I really don't have a use for. There are about 20 of them about the size of a watch battery and they're really, really strong. Do they use a similar kind of magnets in TMS therapy? Maybe I could glue them onto a hat or something?

This is getting silly...

I don't know anything about TMS, but if magnets do have an effect on brain electricity - which certainly isn't impossible to believe - I doubt it's a good idea to try a home version. :)

For the record, when my son was young, I made a year long calendar made up of a curvy path of those exact type of magnets with the days of the month written on them. It took up two posterboard size sheets in our hallway. We put attracting magnets on the bottom of little wooden characters, so that a train went from day to day of the month, and we could count the days to the birthday parties, the start of school, holidays, and other special days.

I never noticed any effect on my brain from the mass of magnets. I did fall in love with them for their holding ability. If there's something thick to put on the refrigerator, those are our go to magnets.

(He outgrew the calendar years ago, but the calendar is still hanging. I painted around it when I painted the hall. I can't take it down until I paint the hall again.)

I have a very powerful magnet called a QuadraBloc. It was developed by Vanderbilt University for pain relief. I suffer from tendinitis in both arms, so that's why I ordered one. It didn't help my tendinitis, but, knowing about TMS, I decided to try taping the QuadraBloc to the left side of my forehead for a couple of hours. It gave me a feeling of well being that continued to grow throughout the day, and then turned into anxiety. I've been much more cautious with it since then. On the rare occasions that I have used it, I haven't left it on long enough to cause as strong a feeling of well being/anxiety.
