PTSD - Need help!!!!

Posted by greenwillow on January 25, 2011, at 10:16:35

I was recently dxd with ptsd. How do I find a psychologist specializing in treating this? Is there a specific website devoted to them or any organizations they generally belong to to help patients find them? What medications are typically prescribed for ptsd?
Thanks, Green Willow

Greenwillow,

Have you been over to the psych board? Post there, too.

Again, I wish I knew.

Are you on medication at all (an alpha blocker?)

Are you in the States? The veterans administration has a site.

I've Google Pete Walker. He has a great article on chronic ptsd. Yours sounds quite acute. But he has links.

Are you having anxiety today? Anyone you can stay close to?

Keep posting.

Tabitha, very cool site.

I was checking it out when my phone said I had reached maximum windows, so I closed them all--and that somehow resent my last message. I'm getting closer to understanding (and stopping) the double posting : /

fb. (chagrined by creating a distraction. )

What kind of PTSD? I have c-PTSD. I think it is really important to get someone who has experience treating trauma. I didn't, and my trauma was multiplied as a result. I don't know for sure, but wehther you have classic PTSD or c-PTSD might make a difference, so you may want to check into whether it does.

PTSD is often accompanied by depression and/or anxiety, so meds for that can be helpful.. but therapy is indeed a crucial component in addressing PTSD.

Solstice, what is c-PTSD? Depression is a major player in mine, as is the heart issue I have developed from adrenaline every morning. Now there's a stomach problem too that they haven't gotten to the root of yet. GW

I don't know if you have insurance, but my insurance company lets you search for therapists by specialties listed. I would think most therapists treat PTSD.

GW, Wikipedia has a pretty good entry on c-ptsd. Some call it chronic ptsd, some complex ptsd. I think they are different perhaps. Read and see what you think.

Google Pete Walker. Pretty immediately an article on c-ptsd comes up. I think it's very good.

> Solstice, what is c-PTSD?

Complex PTSD. Classic PTSD is what's in the 'book.' It's triggered by a single catastrophic event of some type, for example a natural disaster that threatens life, an explosion, being in a car crash (or witnessing it, where great harm is threatened), rape, etc.

Complex PTSD is a lower level of danger - where you aren't necessarily in fear of immediate death, but because of the ongoing, intense level of stress, the threat to your well-being is threatened enough that your sympathetic nervous system is frequently triggered over a long period of time, and you end up (if you're vulnerable to it) with PTSD symptoms. This can be caused by things like long-term abuse as a child, or being in a relationship that is abusive over a long period, or even a series of life crisis that are close together and leave your well-being feeling threatened.

Hope that helps..

For PTSD symptoms-try Prozac first, if that doesn't work, Effexor.

Psychoanalyst for therapy.

Good luck :)
