What do you say?

Posted by no_rose_garden on September 14, 2008, at 18:10:52

When you're at work and you leave and come back to go see your T, where do you say you were?

I tend to sneak out alright, but when i come back, ppl. ask where I was. I usually say I was at a birthday party, but it's obvious that it's a lie. My schedule is flexible, so I'm not breaking any rules, coworkers are just curious. I could say i was at the Dr., but they'd get suspicious if i went to the dr. every week.

I don't tell them anything, as it's none of their concern. I go to my T on my own time, so I don't owe my co-workers any explanation. I'm at my T appointment and back during my lunch hour.

Hi No Rosegarden,

Try just saying, "why? what happened that I missed?" That used to work with my nosey coworkers.

Good luck.

Hi no_rose_garden,

A birthday party! I'll have to use that line sometime! lol...

I agree with Maria01 about it being none of their business, but I always feel compelled to say something. I usually say that - I have to shop, run errands, check on my 4 dogs at home, etc., but never say anything like a walk or dining, just in case they want to join me.

I don't like lying about it, but I wouldn't want to deal with their questions or looks if they knew about my therapy world.

"I could tell you, but I'd have to check your security clearance first."

"I could tell you, but that might lead to a supoena."

"Oh, Tuesdays are when I'm abducted by space aliens for nefarious purposes."

"Elsewhere."

"Do you mind if I don't tell you? I'd really rather not."

"I have an appointment."

In my case, I could say physical therapy, because I'm known to have a couple of serious physical problems. Of course, I also don't work, so don't need to say anything. I'm not sure I'd disclose therapy, but tend to think I might. There's also the "Life Coach" option, if you want to try that, but then I suspect you'd get a lot more questions.

I guess it depends on your coworkers, and your relationship with them -- the first couple work well enough if you have a good rapport, because they get the idea that you don't want to talk about it, but you've also made it a joke.

Hope that helps.

I usually go on my days off, which just happen to be during the week. I went in on a Monday, so I told my boss that I had a dentist appointment. I didn't want her to think I was lying so a few days before hand, I acted like my teeth were bothering me. Lol, I'm weird......

Truthfully, I wouldn't have a huge problem telling some of my co workers that I'm in therapy. They know that I'm into psychology. I don't think they would be surprised. I don't *seem* like a crazy (I hide it very, very well).

Other people I wouldn't want to tell, simply because it's none of their business.

It completely depends. I'm fortunate enough that I don't have to worry about that much.

I agree with everyone else. Less is better and you really have no reason to even answer a question if you don't want to. Just a look and a shrug is enough. Say Out. I would just say out to an appointment. Or be rude and say "I would tell you why? No just kidding.

The jokes are good but again you are not obligated to say anything. This is a question I put to my pdoc and he said you don't have to tell anyone about our appointments it is no ones business but ours.

I realized in that moment he was right, I am an adult and not responsible to having to answer every question but forth to me. It is hard though to break that habit.

Actually I don't think people realize that it is quite a rude question of them to ask you.

If you wanted them to know you would tell them so they should assume that it is none of their business but I guess it is human nature to be curious.

I would say: I have an appointment....no need to elaborate....as it is none of their business (LOL); I do that at work (I don't see my t until after work)...and I know they wonder what kind of an appointment it is.

Hugs, Sassy

Thanks for the feedback

I'm gonna have to use that security clearance idea :P

I also like asking what I missed...that seems like it would work to change the topic fast!

We have a really relaxed environment where I work and chat all the time (there's only a few ppl.)...they're probably the people I know the best (other than my roommate). But I just don't want them to know. I totally understand them being curious...I always feel the need to know everything that's going on.
