Scary thoughts **trigger?**

Posted by fairywings on May 28, 2006, at 16:27:46

Last night I had the most scary thoughts I've ever had in my life. It's not like me to have this kind of thought distortion, but I started Zoloft a few weeks ago, and started having memory and cognitive problems about a week ago. The thoughts creeped up me pretty suddenly, and I couldn't tell for sure if they were real or not.

I had my husband throw away the Zoloft and made him stay with me. I tried to get to sleep, but had trouble closing my eyes because the thoughts and visions in my head were so frightening. I felt like I needed someone to grab me by the arms, look me in the eyes, and tell me it wasn't real and I was going to be okay.

I'm afraid to tell my pdoc - will it sound like I have some underlying psychosis - or will he attribute it to the Zoloft? I've had trouble with the SSRI's before. How do I tell him w/o giving him the details? What if he asks for details? I don't want to tell him!

Sounds important to tell your pdoc. I would encourage you to do so. Your pdoc can best help you if he knows all of your reactions to medications. You must have been scared. I'm glad your husband is there to support you.

Thanks Annie,

I know you're right, I should tell him so he won't Rx it again.

I hope it's out of my system soon. I'm so afraid this reaction will happen again - my husband is going out of town, don't know what I'd do if it happened while he's away!

Hi fw.

Definitely talk to your pdoc about your thoughts, Zoloft and other SSRIs have been known to cause or intensify disturbing thoughts. They can be great for some people, but for other people they can be a nightmare. I was on Paxil myself and it did not agree with me at all, I thought all kinds of bizarre things and couldn't tell what was real and not real.

Even if it isn't the medication that's causing the new thoughts, I still think it'd be very important to talk to your pdoc about. Since the thoughts are so scary, being able to tell your pdoc and possibly be put on a new med that would eliminate those thoughts, would be well worth it. Hope you feel better soon.

Thats so scarey for you. Do you have antianxiety meds?
They can help ALOT.
Y'know a person can have a psychotic episode and it don't mean its ever gonna happen again. But it passes. Doesn't have to be a big deal. Too many movies make it sound bad. But its can just be a passing prob, proly cuz the meds.
I can take zoloft but not paxil, go figger.
Though I dunno these days.
Take care, know that it passes, that it'll be ok, even though its so scarey at the time.
((((FW))))
I love that name.

I would call your pdoc ASAP. That is the sort of thing that s/he would want to know abt so that s/he could give you advice.

It is not unheard of for people to have rxns to SSRI's like the one that you are describing and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do w/ psychosis. Also, are you certain that you don't have bipolar issues? SSRI's can trigger scary mania stuff.

I hope that this passes quickly.

Best,
EE

Thanks Karolina, Muffy, and EE,

I will talk to pdoc. I stopped taking the Zoloft bec. it freaked me out so much! Thanks for your reassurance that it might not be a big deal - glad to know other ppl understand. I don't think I have bi-polar bec. I have ADD and take meds for that. They've never given me any problems, wouldn't bi-polar show up if you're on meds for ADD?

Hugs,
fw
