Marketing of Madness

Posted by stan_the_man70 on May 12, 2014, at 2:58:45

Has everyone watched the documentary 'Marketing of Madness' ? I think the documentary was well-made and covered a lot of issues. It looked at various aspects of psychiatry and a number of people were interviewed.
What is your reaction to the documentary? Do you think it was fair? realistic? propaganda? does not relate to you? too general? not medicinal/scientific?
I hope everyone will reply.

I'm surprised with the number of people who still insist on taking medications or other types of supplements. Don't you look at evidence to the contrary?
They say 10-20% of americans on some sort of psychotropic medication.

thanks for your time

I'd never heard of it, but I just watched some of it on YouTube. One thing I disagree with is its contention that the diagnosis of mental illness is all subjective -- it can't be seen with any of the tools we now have. EEG is one tool (that's rarely used, sadly) that can see and treat depression.

As MRIs become more sophisticated, it's likely that they will be used more frequently to diagnose and treat depression, PTSD, anxiety, maybe even schizophrenia.

I've been watching some more of it (it's three hours long). It makes many good points. It reminded me of what happened to a good friend of mine when he went to the doctor, complaining of low energy, slowed thinking, low mood. The doctor diagnosed depression, and my friend agreed with the diagnosis. My friend was prescribed Pamelor, which he stopped taking because it caused suicidal ideation. Then he was prescribed Paxil, which didn't help. My friend's wife noticed that he would sometimes stop breathing while sleeping, so she made him go to a sleep lab. They hooked him up to some senors and had him go to sleep. They woke him up after four hours, told him he had severe sleep apnea, and gave him a CPAP to wear for the rest of the night. He woke up in the morning, and his depression was gone. It's been gone ever since, thanks to his CPAP.

i find it saddening how people talk about adding more and more to their drug 'cocktail'
one pill for mania, one for depression, one for psychosis, one for the weight gain caused and so on

if they say there is a chemical imbalance in the brain and that is a cause,
wat makes u think taking more chemicals wont create more of an imbalance

I have been thru this regimen - drugs doctors hospitals for more than 10 years
ONLY time I felt better was when i stopped medication and treatment

these drug companies are manipulating healthcare when there are other medicine/health systems out there...
why blindly believe in psychiatry when health professionals don't seem to understand either the condition or the patient...

how is your current condition related to your diet?
to your previous history/childhood traumas?
to conflicts with family/friends/significant other?
to stress at work?
to current lifestyle/exercise/recreation?
to finding the wrong doctor?
to physical and physiological issues?
to the neighborhood/community/city/toxicity/pollution?

sorry dont want this to sound like a tirade against anyone !

How can EEG treat depression?

I think i had one done. They didn't tell me anything about the results so i assume they were fine.

I apologize for spamming, i would appreciate an "edit" function.

It would be a good idea to try other treatments for sleep apnea before resorting to surgery. Have you tried a CPAP? Also, the Pillar Procedure can help some people with mild to moderate sleep apnea.
