Schizo/Bipolar/Depression and the mitochondria

Posted by Lao Tzu on February 12, 2014, at 10:33:46

I did some research on the possibility that certain psychiatric disorders may involve a lack of efficiency of mitochondria. Certainly, it is thought that people with migraines benefit from high dose riboflavin because it helps the mitochondria. And certainly, people with MITO disease have to take certain supplements to improve their condition. What about depression, bipolar, or schizophrenia? I couldn't find a lot of information on the subject, probably because it is still a new field of research, but there may be some correlation with mDNA and certain psychiatric illness.
In my own experimentation, I have felt a great relief of fatigue by taking antioxidants, namely Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and selenium, and by adding high dose Thiamin (B1) and high dose Riboflavin (B2). This combination seems to help a lot with the depression and fatigue associated with my schizophrenia. I'm not drawing any conclusions yet, but I have seen consistent results thus far, unlike other vitamin cocktails I have tried. Does this mean that depression can be cured by using vitamins? I don't know for sure, but it is worth a try if you haven't received adequate benefit from your medications. I have spent many years trying to combine the right supplements as an adjunct to my medication. Don't get me wrong, medications are very useful and necessary in improving one's mental heath, and they do work at stabilizing patients. I would never ever suggest that people with severe mental illness stop their medication. This could be disastrous. Yet, what about the fatigue, lethargy, and bouts of low mood that continue to bother patients? Maybe the mitochondria theory only applies to some people with severe psychiatric illnesses, and maybe it applies to depression patients as well. Personally, I think diet is very important also, but I still need to take the supplements to see improvement. Has anybody read anything about how the mitochondria are linked to depression, bipolar, or schizophrenia? Any new information? I would like to start a new thread if anybody has tried using antioxidants and high dose Thiamin/Riboflavin to assist in their treatment, and possibly any other supplements that assist the function of mitochondria.

high dose alpha lipoic acid helped me. I dropped it, but high dose C (10 grams, time release, in 2 equal doses) really helps.

I'd never heard of luteolin until a few days ago, but I just ordered some from Swanson Vitamins. This is from their website:

The mitochondrial-supporting, cell-defending actions of Luteolin could have profound benefits for key structures and functions within the body that require high amounts of energyareas like the heart, the lungs and the brain, for instance, and the functions governed by these critical organs. In fact, scientists have reported positive outcomes using Luteolin in cardiovascular tissue, brain tissue and lung tissue along with corresponding positive results on the functions they control.

Scott, thank you so much. You are very kind. I really enjoy reading the posts here, and I would love nothing more than to help others who are struggling for answers. I hope that in some small way we can all learn from each other and hopefully, regain that sense of well-being we once had a long time ago.

q10 helps me. It seems to have a calming / stabilizing effect as well as helping energy to some extent. I have used riboflavin too. It seems to help with sleep. I think riboflavin aids in the synthesis of MAO. This might be of use if one is experiencing an elevation of monoamines from MAO deficiency.
