supplements that may make you depressed?

Posted by qqqsimmons on September 14, 2007, at 22:57:28

just curious what sort of lists people might come up with here.

Mine are:
melatonin, magnesium, riboflavin

that's all i can think of for now...and these are precisely the ones i'd take to cut overstimulation...which makes me wonder why i don't stop taking all of this stuff, except my tiny daily dose of fish oil...

other topics for me would be:
- supplements that screw up your sleep
- supplements that make me excessively hungry (lower my blood sugar, whatever)

Great post qqqsimmons, my worst supplements that put me in a apathetic mode are vitamin D3 and magnesium.

Too much fish oil gives me insomnia. Many antioxidants and vitamins as well... like antaxanthin, Alpha lipoic acid (ALA), folic acid (especially methyl folate), B6 (especially pyridoxal 5 phosphate). Many of these supplements also make me agitated and distabilize mood.

I've found cinnamon and ALA to be quite tricky since they lower blood sugar.

Supplements that screw up your sleep?

The ones I like no doubt, like deprenyl and rhodiola and dopaminergics generally.

Too much green tea. B6 is no surprise there. SAMe perhaps.

But I've wondered. ALA and folic acid can do that??

Certainly idebenone can. Maybe propional L carnitine? MSM? Blueberries?

I suffer from mixed state so my mileage maybe different. I've found SAMe, MSM, ALA, B6 and folate to cause agitation...

Never tried rhodiola but ginseng results in increased stress and insomnia.

I forgot about acetyl-L-carnitine... it causes fatigue and apathy.

Bluberries I just love. I tolerate most food... it's when it comes to supplements I get picky ;-)

Anything pro-cholinergic makes me depressed. This includes choline bitartrate, Piracetam, and possibly phosphatidylserine and ginkgo biloba.

Melatonin can make me depressed, but there are times that it can really help my depression too.

It seems to worsen general melancholy, but can really help (for me) with certain stress induced problems.

Magnesium generally helps, but too much makes me feel bla. Too much taurine also makes me feel bla.

Choline makes me depressed only if I take it consistently. If I take it periodically, it really seems to help depersonalization and anxiety.

Too much fish oil does give me insomnia, but I am willing to put up with that for the general improvement in other domains.

Here's my list of supps that make me more depressed (some seconded from above posts):
- acetyl-l-carnitine
Improves concentration and mental energy while at the same time making me feel like nothing's worth doing. Depressed, flat mood over time. Agree with Darwin that it's probably the pro-cholinergic effect.
- vinpocetine
Same as above, but causes even deeper depressive feelings over time
- melatonin
Can cause real dysphoria, especially if I take it two+ nights in a row

Supps I'm suspicious of causing depressive symptoms:
- alpha lipoic acid
Just started taking this one. Feels something like acetyl-l-carnitine, but I haven't noticed any depressive symptoms quite yet. Anyone else?

Supps that can cause insomnia or poor sleep:
- gotu kola
Seems to raise my blood pressure/screw with my heartbeat, which makes it hard to fall asleep!
- SAM-e
Same as above.
- folic acid
If I've taken it more that 5 days in a row (400mcg)
- rhodiola rosea
of course... this supplement would be perfect if it didn't eventually sap more energy by causing poor sleep than it provides
- fish oil
Only if I take it in the evening (I think?)

I'm sure there's more, but I'm far away from my shelves and drawers at the moment...

There's more!

Goji berries.......stimulate SOD or something similar and over a certain amount contribute to insomnia.

Withania.......is said to help with sleep, but that's not my experience. OTOH it makes me feel better, until the day after.

Hydergine may aggravate insomnia.

I hate acetyl-l-carnatine.

Just makes me irritable and sweaty.

No offence to the original poster or contributors in this thread, but maybe this thread should be called threads that make you depressed hehe.

Anyway to readdress the balance, maybe we should have a thread where everyone can say which supplements etc worked for them. :)

The problem for me is that the ones that work screw up my sleep.

It doesn't take much....my sleep is so fragile.

Yesterday for example I allowed myself only 2 cups of tea and a small glass of ginger wine. Once that worked I felt the best I had all day.

I still woke after 4 hours, but managed to sleep lightly after that.

This is the end of the thread.
