help?

Posted by Phil on December 8, 2004, at 8:20:07

I talked about disability once before and I think judy1 recommended a website about how to go about it. I'll have to try and find that. I don't know how I would live on disability but I just can't take much more.
How do you keep working when you have to decide every day if you can even take it. How have y'all who haven't gone on disability managed to get through these kinds of debilitating depression?
help...

Phil,

I am afraid I won't be much help to you. I think my therapist helped me a lot. I would count the hours and minutes until our next appointment... even if it was in the hundreds of hours and thousands of minutes. I went swimming and did lap after lap after lap. Otherwise, it was stubborn will not to give up paired with the sheer terror of the idea of falling further into the abyss and knowing that if I went there I wouldn't come out.

Sending positive thoughts your way.

Alli

Phil,
If you find an answer, I'd love to know. I've looked into SSI/SSDI and haven't had much luck. Especially in Texas. However, it could be that getting an attorney or something like that could help.

I wish you all the best! And please be in touch!

Shar

I will stay in touch. Ooops, it's morning medication time. You know, I could decorate a Christmas tree with all the diffent shapes and colors of pills that I take. We ought to invent Christmas tree lights that illuminate maybe 20 anti-depressants. You could string them outside your house and leave them up till April. : )

BTW, diffent is my way of abbreviating different-clever, huh?

Actually, it should be 'differnt' » Phil

And, I believe in Texas, that is the correct spelling. :)

Hi Phil,
I must have heard you telepathically since I haven't visited this site in ages- actually the prompter said last visit was 1969 but since I was a little kid then I doubt it. Anyway the site is:
http://www.allsupinc.com/ssds/apply_online
I'm so sorry you haven't been doing so well lately, but hopefully if you have some steady income from disability you'll feel less depressed. They did mine in less than 3 months and were wonderful. Make sure your pdoc is on board and fills out all the forms (stay with him/her while they do it- it will give you peace of mind). Once you're approved you'll get a lump sum for retroactive payments- mine went back a year and was pretty significant- like $25K- which of course was gone in a week during a manic spree. I wish you all the best, judy

p.s. try the direct thread

Wow- we're on at the same time! Just some tips- don't minimize anything- be honest in how you simply can no longer work (and haven't been able to w/o a struggle for a long time) MDD is considered one of the 5 'serious' mental illnesses along with bipolar, panic disorder, schizophrenia, and ?. Mine was approved for bipolar/panic and probably went pretty quickly because I was hospitalized at the time- I think that one was a suicide attempt. But my work history really deteriorated the previous year- where I would stop at the freeway exit and start having panic attacks until I turned around and went home. Other days I simply stayed under my covers and felt suicidal- you can probably relate to some of this. Once I made the decision it actually felt pretty freeing- like any acceptance- I know you've been through 12 step programs and understand. If you have any questions please let me know and I'll help in any way I can.
take care of yourself, judy
p.s.- I was told they don't like giving social security for any drug abuse- so they (Allsup) minimized any abuse (self- medication) I was doing at the time. just something I remembered.

Hope all is well-judy
