Fuel on the Cob

Posted by llrrrpp on June 24, 2006, at 18:02:38

With the current push to make the US less dependent on foriegn oil, many are turning to ethanol (ethyl alcohol) as the next big thing in US energy. This means that farmers are now going to send their surplus off to the refinery/distillery. Our cars are going to become alcoholics. God forbid that people should attempt to drink the new fuel- have there been any problems with this?

p.s. my car prefers her vodka neat, chilled until it's opaque and slushy.

Well people have been drinking it for years. It's basically the same stuff as moonshine, or corn liquor. I would imagine that ethanol for cars will have some additives that will make it undrinkable.

My little bro knows where the moonshine guy is in the nearest dry county (he lives in Appalachia). Apparently the guy brews it up, and then puts it in 1 qt mason jars, buried all over his backyard. you show up with a 20 dollar bill, and he goes out with a shovel and digs you up something. God knows what vintage it is! Oh yeah-- he's open 24 hours. That's customer service!

Bro offered me one time, I politely declined.

I hope the gasoline stations make it more public that the stuff is undrinkable. I don't want anyone getting hurt if it's tainted with methanol or worse.

How much do you think a bushel of corn will cost then since the demand will be higher? This will certainly have an effect at the dinner table as energy does not follow the typical supply/demand principles. We may save a little at the pump, but I believe we will pay dearly for everything else that has corn in it.

Some stuff about corn

one bushel of corn is equivalent to-
5 gal.of propane
3.3 gal. fuel oil
134.3 kwh of electricity
4.58 therms of natural gas

ultrasonic treatment in laboratory experiments has increased corn's release rates of sugars by nearly 30 percent.

That's a great link, thanks curt

I guess we're going to pay more for red meat, since beef has corn in it nowadays? I kind of like grass-fed beef though. Maybe the supply-demand thing will encourage the free-range cattle industry to expand. Right now free-range beef is super expensive. Corn-fed, feedlot beef is toxic to the environment and not the best for our arteries either. But it's great for our checkbooks.

mmm beef.

I ride a bike and walk when possible. so I minimize artery and environmental effects of corn surplus.
