I got $1.50 off my movie ticket by showing my student ID card. Finally something useful from all the tuition I'm paying.

NICE!
I tried to get a student discount on the greyhound last semester when I was down east and I had to show them my student ID. So I showed them my ID from here, and they looked at it and looked at it, then asked if I had another student ID. My ID doesn't expire for another 2-3 years!!!!! But I showed then another one and they believed me... Student rates on greyhound are even cheaper than buying the ticket 6 weeks in advance

Students here in Finland get half price train tickets, period. On all tickets, routes, etc etc.... Its great! We don't, however, get any discounts at the movies unfortunately.

Hi Gee,
My student ID has no expiration date, so as long as I resemble the photo on it, I should be able to get my movie discounts for a long time. I thought it was odd that it didn't have a sticker or something on it indicating the school term, the other schools I went to the IDs did, but I'm not going to argue, not if it saves me money.

Hi Meri-Tuuli,
Too bad you don't get a movie discount, but I'm assuming the railroad system in Finland is as good as other places in Europe so that discount would be a nice benefit. I traveled through Switzerland via train and it was great way to get around.

Sometimes, if you're in the kind of situation I'm in, if you're a student you don't have to apply for any jobs for at least a while (or, in the case of grad school, a long, long time).
Sorry Poet, this is flitting across my mind as I think of you and your interviews today. I HATE applying for jobs. Hate it! My socialist tendencies come out and I think we should just be assigned work and get paid for it, preferably work we like... :) From each according to ability, to each according to need. No more CVs, dressing up for interviews, thank-you cards, any of it. As long as I can check the Web at work, I'd be happy to have at least some of the control taken away from me.
Anyway, I like the whole student-stasis thing. Feels safe.
take care,
philyra

Hi Philrya,
I hate dressing up for the interview, putting on that big fake smile, and sending that thank you letter even though deep down you think this is a waste of time, paper, postage, etc.
I always worked and went to school, so not working and taking classes feels strange to me. Either of the jobs would be good, both are related to what I'm in school for, and I hope that I made it clear to them that I have no illusions that once I finish the program I'll land a high paying job in the field, and quit working for them.
Enjoy your student-stasis, if I don't get either job I'll be enjoying mine for a bit longer.

You should study medicine in the UK, we are now assigned jobs according to our ability (ranked among our peers according to our grades) and an application form that is scored. We get to rank choices of jobs, but have to sign to say we'll take any job we are offered (wherever it is in the country). If we then decide we don't want the job, we can be reported to the General Medical Council (body that oversees doctors in the UK) for compromising patient care, because there will be no-one to fill the vacancy.I'd rather have interviews any day, at least you can choose what jobs to apply for and the interviewer can see what they're getting. Some of the people in my year can't talk to people at all but will get the best jobs in medicine because they have great academic grades.
PS In the UK we get student discount on trains and at the movies, but not much. It's still cheaper to travel by car than get a discounted ticket on the train most of the time though!

Hmmm, you definitely make it sound less appealing now that i think more about it. ;)
that sounds kind of scary, actually. although i might be setting myself up for being "willing" to work anywhere in the country if i continue on the grad school track...at least they don't penalize you (technically) for not taking a job offer, though.
take care,

i hate all that stuff, too.
i also have a bad habit of selling myself really strongly even if i don't really want the job. it's like i think it's more important that they want me than that i want them...
did you hear back from the other place yet btw?
take care,
philyra

Hi Philyra,
I haven't heard from place number one, yet. She said she was still interviewing this week, but would let me know either way. I know I would be good at this job. I hate the wait, I hate feeling that I'll be rejected. Argh.
