! My socialist tendencies come out and I think we should just be assigned work and get paid for it, preferably work we like... :) From each according to ability, to each according to need. No more CVs, dressing up for interviews, thank-you cards, any of it. As long as I can check the Web at work, I'd be happy to have at least some of the control taken away from me.
You should study medicine in the UK, we are now assigned jobs according to our ability (ranked among our peers according to our grades) and an application form that is scored. We get to rank choices of jobs, but have to sign to say we'll take any job we are offered (wherever it is in the country). If we then decide we don't want the job, we can be reported to the General Medical Council (body that oversees doctors in the UK) for compromising patient care, because there will be no-one to fill the vacancy.I'd rather have interviews any day, at least you can choose what jobs to apply for and the interviewer can see what they're getting. Some of the people in my year can't talk to people at all but will get the best jobs in medicine because they have great academic grades.
PS In the UK we get student discount on trains and at the movies, but not much. It's still cheaper to travel by car than get a discounted ticket on the train most of the time though!
