Runners?

Posted by Lamdage22 on May 26, 2018, at 10:40:50

I have picked up running again. I think exercise is a pretty powerful tool for us if we do it regularly. Its like the hardest thing to do when depressed but it pays off. Dont ask me why i now have the zest to do it while a couple weeks ago i did not. It is now clear to me, things can change for the better and not necessarily all because of medication.

I ran, once. Then I got a cold or flu or something and never ran, again.

I would I could run, now. Mostly because I can't, I suppose. I think I would have taken up martial arts of some kind or boxing if I could run / jump / be a bit more agile on my feet. Polevault looks fun. Hammerthrow.

It's funny how sometimes things just work out when othertimes that very same thing seems next to impossible to muster the whatever one needs to get started.

How far do you run / for how long?

I run merely 1.2 miles in less than 20 minutes. I just got started. I run for a bit then i walk, then i run again. I was told to increase by 10% every week.

there is this awesome running app runtastic that tracks your progress. Speed, duration, pace, distance, calories...

sounds good. i hope you keep enjoying it.

i'm always surprised at how quickly one can progress in a week or two in doing fairly much the same thing but with trying to do just a bit more (faster or further or whatever) each time.

i'm waiting on scholarships will alleviate my poverty for a bit... then i think i might buy a yoga mat and see about a 1 month free trial on yoga. otherwise i need to pay, like, a buck for mat hire each time.

i've learned i'm good for 1 month. at that point i'm adapted and it's good to switch it up and do something else. it's also at that point that people properly decide that i simply must switch up my focus from the actual work and focus on interacting with them... an element of 'or else'.

if ever i found that not to be the case... i'd stick around.

i'm also going to buy a cheap-ish (though they are actually fairly expensive in themselves, it seems) road racing sort of bicycle.

i used to have a bmx when i was a kid, which i loved. in a ghetto kind of way haha. then was more into mountain / lite trail kinds of bikes. but, really, i mostly use it on the road. and there are hills around here. lots of them. i need something a bit lighter for hill climbs. and it will be fun now i know the road rules etc from motorcycling. it would be nice to get some speed on...

i have a gym membership... but because it's a 24/7 hour gym it's basically... an excuse to have 'security cameras' up filming everything all the time. probably also (especially) in the showers, i'd imagine. i don't use public showers etc but need to change somewhere and the bathrooms are not kept in a good state by the clientele. people don't seem to know how to use a toilet brush and then the individual rooms don't have air extraction so there is a constant smell of mould / damp masked by cheap deoderant. it is just not very pleasant, anymore.

when i was a teenager, i got up early in the morning and ran with a CD player, or in the afternoon, and night. I used to be a runner. It made me a better mood, or just a good mood while running

but now running got painful and requires discipline rather than enjoyment

you inspired me to go swimming. i've been meaning to, for a while, but been putting it off. there's a gym as part of the pool, too, so i mostly went to check out that, but there are lane swimming pools and diving pools and so on.

and i thought i might get into swimming... but then i went back today, and all the lanes are full. people lane splitting. two, or more. and then it becomes about avoiding the people and you can't really train it properly.

tragedy of commons.

i watched the kids doing some diving. they let general swimmers use the boards, but don't seem to turn the bubbled on for the general swimmers. so, you need to join a club to have bubbles, it seems. and then you are stuck doing what someone says when someone says because they are the coach. the kids this afternoon seemed fairly hands off. mostly just messing around. but little elements. and i realised diving is highly systematised. like gymnastics. with particular skills and progressions on skills and different 'grade levels' on it and so on and so forth right up into the Olympics right on your whatev-ith birthday. Sort of a thing to be doing.

And of course swimming is largely the same way. They would have us believe...

They would have us believe...

But then you read about the history of such things and how techniques developed and evolved over time. And about arbitrary rules that constrict that thus and so (e.g., because it isn't as fun to see your swimmers with a seal-skin sort of a suit that means muslim women can compete, too, and because it isn't as fun to see swimmers of all the 'different' strokes do... uh... nearly all of the race under the water, since swimming is actually faster that way...

so... years and years and years of focused work, for sure.

but of course you aren't allowed to do that if someone decided they wll coach you. and so on..

and the whole public bathrooms thing...

anyway...

i have a decision to make. i get some goggles and learn to do most of it underwater - like everybody else - or i quit. i guess swimming and diving is something that people 'get' here, though. in this town, i mean.

and of course the real stuff gets done at 6 in the morning...

i could see about it...

and of course, there is a gym. not with a 15kg oly barbell, of course (that will have people presiding over it). but a 20kg bar i can grind away a bit on...

a lot of the basic fundamental sort of stuff is the same for most sports. and i do see the sense in which there is a high level of body control and so on in a lot of the 'individual' sports.

like diving and swimming and olympic lifting.

i don't know.

why must things always be so very overcrowded?

i get that it takes a considerable investment of time to get a person to put in those focused hours. but we just don't seem at all good at sorting them...

there is this 'natural talent' or 'raw ability' thing (mostly kids who are just big for their age and / or grade level) which needs to be distinguished from the kids who have the things in place such that they can reliably turn up to practice for days on end for years of their lives...

kids who are trainable. so they can practice entering into the pool perfectly vertically over and over and over and over and over and over and over... instead of only really being interested in 'showing off' with 'tricks' they don't have the abilty to pull off (e.g., because they can't get themselves into any of the positions -- even less hit the positions at the right time).

at school it was always about the bullies. give everyone a bit of a go and then invest (insofar as there was any investment at all) in the one who was naturally the best. i remember that got me to represent the school for breaststroke and backstroke year afer year after year after year. but at regionals i came up against kids whose parents got or sent them to swim training before or after school for years... and i was totally outclassed. which is, of course, as it should be. hard work pays off. for sure. but who knows how i would have done if i had have gotten to swim training.

anyway... i turned 30 and decided to learn how to do a cartwheel and a handstand... turn 40 and take up diving? we'll see...

water polo?

i don't know.

we'll see how long it takes for me to get sick of / from the chlorine.

and high jump, too. uninstructed scissor technique. then you meet the kids who actually trained athletics who learned to flop and totally outclassed, again.

i said to my mother about how i rememembered swimming a lot with Dad when i was a kid. and yeah, he taught me to dive from the side of the pool and how to breaststroke etc, yeah.

she reminded me how she used to take me to skateworld. roller skating. and yeah, she did. like maybe once a month, or something like that. there was a 4 hour session, thing. and she'd get out there and drag me around (she didn't have skates on) and I literally got dragged up learning to roller skate. and they would have these competitition things and i would always win the roller skate limbo. in the early years because i was the smallest thing on roller skates. in later years because i actually had pretty good skill / balance. not that i did the splits, but anyway...

but then i remember the day a lady from the club, there, showed me the circles and about how you could go around the circles on one leg... and that's a different level of skill, entirely.

and my mother didn't like that.

and i didnt really do roller skating after that. but i remember from school a kid did figure skating a couple years down the track and i was blown away at what she could do and it was a different thing entirely.

and a lot of people do just sort of shy away and give up right when things start to get really interesting. right where the hard work really has the potential to pay off.

my mother really just doesn't get it. i wasn't allowed to do anything... especially not to do with horses (my real passion). but not to do with anything... especially not when it involved developing or extending something i showed a genuine sort of ability and malleable interest in...

horrible woman.

glad to hear you are sticking with it. i bet it is nicer to run closer to dawn or dusk in the summertime.

i've been sticking with the swimming.

i really like the atmosphere around the pool. all kinds of people from kids to the elderly. all kinds of water sports from diving to swimming to triathalon to water polo to aqua jogging. all kinds of level of abilities.

i like lifing weights around the swimmers because they mostly don't really go in for lifting weights. they'are not really built for it with their lanky limbs. i'm more built like them. it's nicer for me to train with them because they can see the hard work that i've put in to have any kind of control of my femur (for example) to even lift the bar. lifing with weightlifters... the dwarven folk... is more likely to get me injured if i listen to their advice, really. i just can't do what it is that they do with their bodies.

anyway...

i guess people in the community, here, are getting to see me in the gym. seeing what it is in weightfliting that i like. how it is technical... kinda like diving.

how it can be useful for building a powerful kick. and for building some strength in the upper body to power the lanky limbs.

and all those hip replacement people with their aquajogging.

yep.
