Going to Vegas soon!

Posted by Deneb on December 11, 2012, at 12:52:41

I'm going to Vegas on Monday!

I'm so excited!

It's the first time I'm going to Vegas as an adult. The last time I went I was a child, and it wasn't all that exciting.

I'm almost all set!

I'm going to start packing today and make sure I have clean clothes.

It's going to be so fun!

Has anyone else gone to Vegas lately? How was it?

Fun Fun Fun :-) What a brilliant way to cheer on the holidays, Deneb.

I haven't had the pleasure of visiting Vegas in a long while, but it's been on my radar for a go-to-place for a quick pick-me-up. What's great about Vegas is there is so much to do and see: shows, themed hotels, shopping, buffets, and my favorite activity, people-watching. The tourists come from all over the world to experience Vegas so you'll be in the midst of people from all walks of life.

Hope you have a wonderful time and please let us know how your experience goes. It would be great to see some photos from your adventure if you feel comfortable sharing.

Bon voyage! :-)

Ahhh! Ottawa is currently having a big freezing rain/snow storm.

Such great timing! LOL

My flight leaves at 6am "today". I sure hope my flight isn't cancelled!

Plus on the only day I'm going to the Grand Canyon, there is rain, what the heck? lol. It won't rain on other days, just on the one day I'm going to the Grand Canyon. Bummer. LOL If visiblity is poor and I can't see the canyon at all, I'll be pissed. It's also supposed to be a "sunset tour", no sunset viewing will also leave me pissed. LOL I paid a lot of money to see a sunset over the canyon and it's a long long drive there from Vegas.

Have a great trip! (nm) » Deneb

My Mom totally does not understand why in the world someone would travel solo, least of all her daughter. LOL

She very different from me personality wise.

She told me she could *never* eat alone at a restaurant, watch a movie alone, shop alone, travel only (or do anything alone really!) LOL.

To me traveling, watching movies, shopping alone means I get to do whatever I want to so without having to worry about what others want. It is kind of selfish I guess, but it doesn't matter because I'm alone. LOL.

Honestly I love shopping alone. Other people get really annoying, my mother especially. She's so nitpicky about everything and of course everything I want to purchase is a "horrible" decision.

Watching movies alone is also awesome. I do sometimes ask people to join me, but if they cannot, what am I supposed to do, cancel my plans? Apparently that's what my mother would do.

I just find that's kind of a sad way to live. So if no one every went out with her again, she would stay inside for the rest of her life.

I asked others to join me in going to Vegas, but people didn't have time, or didn't have the budget or didn't want to go. That's fine. I'm not canceling just because I'm solo.

If I am ever to get married, I definitely need a lot of space most days. I don't need my "other half" because I'm whole already.

Does anyone else travel solo? What do you like/dislike about it and why do you travel solo?

Absolutely. Been doing it on and off for at least 17 years. I think we think alike (maybe we both have Great Minds, eh?? ;-)) because it has *never* stopped me from doing any of those things you listed. It's fun and freeing.

Why do it? Divorced,, no one able financially to come along, or don't want to go where I go, or just impulsive. I like the company of family usually, or years back maybe a close fried, too, but I like alone almost as well. I *like* my own company, and I think you do, too. I believe that's fairly healthy because as you said, it's not limiting. Most people who have questioned me ask why I'm not afraid. It surprised me because it didn't occur to me to be afraid until they said that! And I'm still not. If you are sensible and street savvy enough, not prone to panic, adn prepared for things, traveling alone does not have to be all that risky.

You go, girl....but DO be careful in Vegas. I have been a few times and there are places not to go and it can be dangerous in the vicinity of the strip for a young woman. I think you will have a blast just looking at all the weird and larger than life stuff (and gain 5 pounds from the cheap, 24-hour food!!) Lol!

I am impressed and proud of you. You are such a positive Babble story.

With your mom, it is cultural and about gender, do you think? Or being married? Would it be cool if you were a son? Does she ever say *why* she wouldn't do those things? Brought up that way? So interesting.

I have. It was easier in a lot of ways.
I absolutely prefer shopping alone, no need to worry about anyone else, wander at will.
Have fun, Deneb. :-)

I'm in Vegas now!

Getting to the airport was kind of an adventure because my Dad and I kept missing the exit overuu and over again in the unfamiliar darkness of early morning.

We headed for the airport at 3:50 am but missed the exit 3 times. Each time we went past the exit and had to backtrack. It was so annoying!

The trip should only take 10 mins but we didn't to the airport until 4:30 am LOL.

My Dad and I both have very poor senses of direction.

Anyways it all worked out because getting there earlier wouldn't have made a difference anyways because the border people or customs didn't open until 5 am. Even though I got to the airport I still had to wait 10 mins for customs to open.

For the flight from Ottawa to Newark we got delayed a bit because the entire plane had to be de-iced. I thought I wasn't going to make my connection but I got there just in time for boarding.

It was neat having the plane de-iced while we were still inside. They sprayed this soapy looking liquid at high pressure over the plane, focusing on the wings. I'm sure it wasn't soap but it looked like soap. Maybe our planes during winter already take into account the time for de-icing a bit because while we were late, we weren't so late that people missed their connections.

United has a heck of a lot of different boarding classes! Of course I was 7th, having bought the cheapest seats. My seat mates were really annoying. They basically wanted 1st class treatment but then again the airline call centre really misled them into thinking United would be able to accommodate their food allergies. As it turns out only people in first class get special food for health reasons. Economy class was out of luck.

The plane to Vegas was a 747 and it was so empty. People started switching seats and many got to lay down across all three seats to sleep.

Anyways the flights were super long and my butt fell asleep several times lol. It was extra terrible because I had only gotten an hour of sleep that morning and I was so sleepy but couldn't because it was too noisy and uncomfortable. I was nodding of so much but couldn't sleep.

I took a shuttle to my hotel and I must say that I'm really impressed with my room! It's larger than I thought it would be and it's clean and quiet. I'm impressed because I'm only paying $34 a night for it.

I walk around a few surrounding casinos for a bit. I explored Bally's, Paris and Caesars palace. All the smoke I. Caesars palace really irritated my eyes. I put $20 into a slot machine at Paris and lost $2.50. I stopped at that point and cashed out mt $18.50 lol. But then I tried my luck at anothe slot machine called Wheels of Fortune. This time I only put $5 into it. I lost twice but then I won about $17.88. I decided to quit at that point. I tried on hand on a table game, roulette. The minimum bet was $5 so I bet $5 on red. I won $10 so again I decided to quit despite the person trying to convince me to get more practice.

In all it wasn't too bad of a day gambling wise lol but I know that the longer I play those games with terrible odds, the higher chance I will lose money.

I had wanted to learn the optimal strategy for jacks or better but I haven't learned it enough yet. That is one of the few games where it is possible to come out ahead if you play very well according to statistical analysis. I doubt I will master it these few days so I think I will avoid it.

I have to get up early for my Grand Canyon tour tomorrow so even thought it is only 6:12 here now, I'm going to bed lol. I don't think most people have even started to have fun yet.

I'll tell you how it goes tomorrow.

Ugh

My Internet was giving me such a hard time!

I tried posting my previous post yesterday but couldn't. Anyways to update my Grand Canyon tour got cancelled! I didn't know because I had turned off my cell to prevent roaming charges.

I can't reschedule these next few days because I have shows booked. I'm not sure what to do today as my only plans were to go to the Grand Canyon.

I went to bed at 7pm last night because I was super tired from not sleeping.

I think I will go to the Miracle Mile mall now as I'm right across the street from it.

OMG it's so hard to find water here. LOL Booze is easy to come by, but good luck trying to find a reasonably priced bottle of water!

The tap water in my hotel tastes terrible.

I ate breakfast early in the morning at the Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood. It was ok but it was expensive for breakfast. It was $19 not including tip. I should have just tried to find a cheap breakfast place as I wasn't even that hungry. It settled for the buffet because my Internet wasn't working there and I couldn't research places to eat.

My Internet works great right outside Paris and in the lobby of Bellagio thought. That's where I am now, at Bellagio. Now my problem is finding places to sit. There are lots of seats in the casino but good luck trying to find a regular place to sit! I'm sitting in the lobby now.

My throat feels funny. I may be coming down with a cold :-( I think I might have caught a bug in the plane or something.

Oh I managed to find cheap water finally. I found a big bottle of water at the ABC shop inside the mall at Planet Hollywood. It was only 99 cents. I then drank a lot of water but now my belly is too full and I need to rest.

When I feel better I think I'll go visit the Bellagio conservatory.

Oh a funny thing happened in the Miracle Mile mall inside Planet Hollywood. My hands were super dry and chapped so I visited a small booth vendor selling lotion to get a free sample.

The man there tried so hard to sell me this super expensive lotion that felt like nothing more than regular aloe lotion from the drug store. Nothing in the ingredients were that expensive.

Anyways he put the lotion on my hands himself and then would not let go lol. I'm guessing this tactic usually works on women who feel attraction to him by doing that because he was fairly good looking. But little did he know, he wasn't the one trying to scam me with ultra expensive, (over $50 with large special discount for regular drug store ingredients lotion) I was the one scamming him for a free sample of lotion for my chapped hands lol. He sounded kink of pissed when I told him I couldn't bring it on my carry on because I had too many liquids already and that I'd walk around and "think" about it.

He picked the wrong person to try to sell too because I already know a lot of tricks of selling and I'm pretty assertive myself now from trying to convince people to do surveys with me at work and dealing with people who want to slack off at my work (me being middle management).

It's never occurred to me to be afraid either. I love traveling alone and being able to do only what I want to do when I want to do it. But I probably started doing it just because it was easier to schedule. Other people never had time off when I did. And there's nothing quite so relaxing as being all alone in a car on the interstate in the middle of the night. I have enjoyed a few trips with other people (you need to choose them carefully) but it's a totally different experience - more about the socializing then the travel. I guess that's true about shopping too.
