If you are sensible and street savvy enough, not prone to panic, adn prepared for things, traveling alone does not have to be all that risky. It's never occurred to me to be afraid either. I love traveling alone and being able to do only what I want to do when I want to do it. But I probably started doing it just because it was easier to schedule. Other people never had time off when I did. And there's nothing quite so relaxing as being all alone in a car on the interstate in the middle of the night. I have enjoyed a few trips with other people (you need to choose them carefully) but it's a totally different experience - more about the socializing then the travel. I guess that's true about shopping too.
