I am so lonely and depressed as a result of my bipolar disorder. I feel this way most of the time and feel like no one understands, although I am sure that you all understand. It does not help that I can not sleep at night and that is when it is the worst. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I have tried a number of things to help me sleep, I have even tried Ambien but of course, that doesnt help either.

I assume that you live alone? I actually find that I sleep better alone because I'm not disturbed. Or perhaps you need to meet someone. Meeting that right kind of person can be difficult. At least I think so.

Hi Ed_Uk2010,
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. It would seem that I live alone given the loneliness but the truth is I have been with my man for 10 years. We have been married for five and have a one year old little girl and a four year old little boy. During the day, I miss adult interaction especially with my husband. I used to work full time so this would help during the day but now I have been on medical leave for a month and I miss work yet I do not feel sane enough to go back. As for the nights, I never go to bed with my husband anymore. I just can't sleep so I don't see him during the day and I no longer get to sleep next to him at night. My family is asleep yet I am up alone knowing that I am going to ruin the next day from being exhausted from staying up all night. I just want to get back on a normal schedule but the sleepness nights and the exhaustion during the day is really making it hard. To top it off, even if I did sleep I would still be tired during the day due to my darn narcolepsy. Any more suggestions would be appreciated? Thank you.

Ha Ha, I don't talk back to myself lol! You know, I think it starts out that way. I tell myself I am going to watch some tv for a couple of hours then go to bed but then it gets later and later and I get sad and its just a stupid cycle every night. The few nights my husband has tried to hang out with me when he doesnt have to work, I end up keeping him up all night and then our day is ruined. I have never been non responsive to Ambien so that really worries me. How in the world am I supposed to go back to work with out sleep?! Its annoying thats for sure!

Hi GG,

Sometimes, going back to work can make you sane, even when you don't feel sane enough to go back. It keeps the mind occupied and you would get the adult interactions which you are missing. Could you do part time?
I imagine that some changes to your medication would also help you sleep. This is definitely something to discuss with your doctor.

I am going to see my PCP tomorrow. I will let him know that I NEED something to make me sleep. I cant take it anymore and the failed attempts of ant depressents and antpsychotics to kill two birds with one stone is just not working. I know my neuro said that meds that put me to sleep will aggrevate the narcolepsy but I have uppers for that, Darn it I NEED sleep. LOL! Ill ask him about Ativan and see what he says. He is a doctor that I can actually talk to without a condesending tone being thrown back at me.

Hi ED_UK2010,
I agree with you. Unfortunately, I can not go back part time as I (dont laugh) am a counselor. Ha Ha I know how ironic right. I am actually really good at it as I focus on education and not mental illness. I will go back on an intermittent FMLA which will allow me to call out up to four days a week if I have "episodes of incapacity" The only thing is that I have people that need me to be at work. If I miss a day, I can really let someone down. It was really hard for me to go on a leave as I felt like I was betraying my students. In addition, I plan on adjusting all of my meds again because they are just not working for me. Thanks for the advise.

Yep,
That was my last attempt at meds to help kill two birds with one stone. Unfortunately, I could take that med and just stay awake all night it was so frustrating. I appreciate the suggestion, any more would be appreciated as I am going to the Dr. tomorrow.

I take clonazapam and zopiclone and if things get really rough, I'll add a seroquel to the mix. I'm bipolar also and keeping a rigid sleep schedule is crucial to me keeping somewhat stable. I haven't had any luck with mood stabilizers.
Here's to your pdoc and you coming up with a good combo to help you get some much needed zzzzzzzzzz's.

I have not tried zopiclone but I have tried the others with no help. Thanks for the concern. I will see the doc tomorrow and hopefully get some results.
This is the end of the thread.
