what did people do before trashy magazines?

Posted by LlurpsieNoodle on May 31, 2007, at 21:40:21

Imagine what life would be like without something to read as one produces solid waste.

Would life be worth living?

Would we all be constipated?

Is this why there were cave paintings at Lascaux?
Heck there are cave paintings all over the world. An ancient solution to the potty blues?

I think we had a lot more time because we would be doing something else other than finding quality time on the pot. ;-)

I had this weird thing when I was younger where I HAD to read SOMEthing while producing solid waste.
Sometimes there was nothing, and I would sit there madly pawing thru the drawer next to the pot to find some text ANY text. Even reading toothpaste tubes OK, just has to be something to read
Weird eh.
And I think this is quite common.
Now its not such a big deal to me.
Hmmmm.

Which ones do you read? I don't know enough about trashy magazine to have any-- but I'm eager to learn!

Any info on the subject would be much appreciated.

Well, before the mags, there probably where a bit fewer young adolescent boys creating nocturnal emissions and staining their sheets :-)(Mom says to little Joey.."How come you changed your sheets 6 times this week!")
But, first came the Sears catalogue....it almost felt like a sin looking at the women's undergarment section..:P hahaaa When you are 12, anybody is going to wonder why you need to look at the Sears catalouge.

Oh, I think that these magazines have been around for a long time!! and they were part of the Hollywood machinery. It sued to be more overt, with planted stories and scheduled interviews, that's all. When the star/starlet system broke down in the late 50's, along with the studios and their star-making departments, it all went underground. And it ended up on the check out line of the grocery store. That's my sociological take on the evolution, anyway.

But unless you watch E!, how are you supposed to keep up on all the gossip these days?
I love how people read the magazines whilst in line and then put them back before they check out. Like I never do it.... "Oh, I never read this stuff!!"

Me too. I have been known to read the lables on tomato sauce bottles (to change the location) in order to quell the anxity of having nothing to read.

I quite like reading short articles about failed plastic surgery.

Hello Honore
Allow me to recommend some from here.
You won't have them there but you could import them!
Then again, something similar is as close as your nearest newsagent

"Womens Day"
"New Idea"
"The Alpha Male" (I have not read this charmingly named one, and will mend my ways.)

Do you remember Pix and Post? They used to have a letter section at the back where people wrote in what I am sure were entirely fictitious problems to be sorted out by the councillor. One such was along the lines of 'I was giving my alsation a bath, and it is my practice to do it naked' and so on.

For quickies,
I like InStyle and inTouch, Anything with paris hilton, nicole's bones, and meltdown lohan on the cover. makes me think that my own non-charmed life is perhaps simpler and better.

warning- do not bring the New Yorker into the bathroom. your legs will fall asleep and then you will fall on the floor when you are all done producing.
