I just realized that I'm terrified at the prospect of finding and starting a new job.
As a result of this, I'm not trying very hard to find a job. :-(
My parents enable me too much by not requiring much from me. I keep telling myself that I will pay my parents back, but I should be doing that already.
I'm want a simple job that is not too difficult. I'm afraid of screwing up. I went to the Tim Horton's across the street from where I live to get an application. Just doing that intimidated me. I don't even know if I'm capable of working in fast food (even though I have done it in the past). I swore I would never work in fast food again, but I'm getting desperate here. I need a job. I can't do nothing all summer.
I don't think I can work in retail because I'm not a very friendly and outgoing person.
I don't want to work as an interviewer for a market research firm again because I don't like bothering people. That job was worst than fast food I think, it was intensely boring.
I don't think I can work as a server because I'm afraid I will spill drinks and drop plates.
I can't work in an office, I don't have experience.
I don't think I can work at Starbucks, what if I forget how to make the drinks?
I'm just afraid of starting new things. I don't have a lot of confidence in myself. I don't think I will be able to learn anything. I don't think I can do anything. I don't think I'm competent.

Everyone has pre-job jitters. It may be a self esteem issue. You will do better than expected. I worry about being fired but everyone says I'm doing fine.
good luck, Jake

hey there,
I'm supposed to be finding a job too. I don't have the confidence either.
How about doing some voluntary work, say just one afternoon a week or something? That way, anything that you do do would be a bonus, and there wouldn't be any pressure on you.
Just a thought. Start small.
And anyway, I've spilt drinks and stuff as a waitress, and it nearly isn't as bad as you think it will be. And if you forget to make a drink at starbucks, you can always ask someone discreetly. I'm sure you'll learn fast. They have leaflets and things behind the bar there anyway.
Everyone makes mistakes!!
Kind regards
Meri

I just came home to a message from a shoe store close to where I live.
I have an interview on Mon! Anyone have any interview tips? What kind of questions will they ask? I need to prepare myself. How should I thank the person who interviewed me? Send a thank-you note? Or call her/him and thank her/him personally?
I haven't had many interviews. I think I'll be nervous. I really need a job! I can't keep taking my family's money. I have to look after myself. My parents are a little *too* supportive. They will deposit money into my bank account without my knowledge.
I really want this job! Please please please let me have this job. It's at a very convenient location for me.

Be on time!
Prepare a few questions, and don't be afraid to ask them at the end of the interview, especially if he/she asks you if you have any questions. When you listen to the interviewer, make eye contact. That will signal that you're interested.
Good luck!
you'll do great :)

I'd recommend going to your uni's careers service. They'll have videos (or even DVDs!) about interviews and things like that. They are really helpful.
Also prepare your responses in advance - for questions such as:
'Can you give an example when you have given excellent customer service'
or
'Tell me about a time you have had a problem and how you have gone about solving it'
or
'Can you give me an example of a time when you've had to work within a team to achieve a common goal'
that sort of thing.
Although I live in the UK, so I don't know how relevant this is!! But in my experience, these are common questions.
Kind regards
Meri

Why do you say that?
You already have a job right? I bet you do a great job.

Yes, I have a job, and I'm good at it. Except for not always being well enough to work.
It's getting a job I couldn't do. Not doing the job itself.
I couldn't think of a single answer to any of those questions, and don't think I could if I took a month to think about it.

I think the interview went well, for the most part, but I think I need to like children more. The children's shoe department is very important and I don't know how to interact with kids that well. I think it shows.
Now that I've had the interview I have doubts about whether I can do the job. I'm not much of a people person, not at all. This job requires me to interact with people and sell things. I think it will be stressful for me. :-(
There is also no guarantee of hours. I could get zero hours on some days. I don't think I will earn very much with this job. Then again, it will be better than earning zero dollars now.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Don't try to be perfect, no one can do it all right off the bat. Just give it a try, do the best you can, and if it doesn't work out you'll have a little bit more knowledge for your next attempt.
And I don't think anyone really likes customer service, but its a good thing to learn. It teaches you patience, respect for other people in your position, and can build your confidence. I think everyone should work in retail or fastfood at least once in their lives.
I remember the first day of my first job. I told every customer it was my first day. I was so afraid they would get mad at me. Months later, I had a couple of different people tell me they remembered my first day and how nervous I was, but now I was a pro. Most people are more understanding than you would think. And the ones who aren't would be jerks no matter what.
I hope you get a job soon! Don't give up.
