I am a displaced New Yorker living in a very rural area of Missouri. We had a tornado come through here around a week ago or so and tear up a little part of town only 6 miles away. No one was hurt but the devestation is mind boggling. I was alway afraid of these things even though my hubby who grew in Kansas City laughs it off. Well I have 3 teenage boys and no basement. During this previous storm we had hail break a skylight. I know he tells me that this was his folks home for what seems like forever and never once did they get hit. My question to those that deal with these things is HOW??? I live in a place with no friends and no family left so it is just you guys (and my immediate family, obviously).

My favorite hiding hole was the master bedroom closet. A bathroom is great too if not on an outside wall. OR an inside hall with all the doors closed.
You'll be okay. Listen to the weather reports. In some parts of the country they can tell you down to the block almost if it is going to hit. Six miles is pretty far away. REALLY

I lived in tornado alley for over 20 years. You do sort of get used to it! Anyway, we didn't have a basement either so that is what I did. :-)

I am one of those 'closet' (no pun intended) tornado lovers in that I would love to see one...from a distance....going the OTHER way, lol! Have you ever seen one yourself?

Yes, it was aloft at the time and appeared white against the dark clouds. Hit a few miles away as I recall.

very scary indeed. i have been through many w/o a basement and the best advice is to get in the most stable, center area of your home that is lowest to the ground. preferably no windows like a closet. always have a mattress to cover your heads from debri, a battery powered radio, working flashlights, a first aid kit, a couple gallons of water on hand. if you live in a common area where tornado's hit, do any neighbors have a cellar? i would ask for the safety of you and your family. maybe for your own comfort, look up the emergency center in your area that handles these situations and ask for advice...hope that helps some.

A doorway on an inside wall is a good place, so if the closet is on an inside wall, I think it'll be safe.
I live in a Tornado area (fortunately have a basement)but they rarely touch down within 20 miles of here. Just lots of high winds that knock tree branches down.
The one time a tornado was close by, I heard the siren go off and as always ignored it. I was ripping tile off the bathroom wall and took a bag of it out to the garbage can. Came in and told my husband that it's really windy out there. It wasn't until I saw the paper the next morning that I found out that wind was strong for a reason.

Coming home from Florida when my kids were little I saw the aftermath of a tornado. Billboard signs blown down, roofs off of houses, no electricity, no way to get gas. It was the scariest thing I'd ever seen and then kept heading our way. When we got to the Carolinas there was an ice storm. Again no gas or electricity. I couldn't wait to get back to Connecticut where we lived them Well that was my first husband how many stories do you want? Love Phillipa

I was in the Carolina's during the ice storm you are probably speaking about. I was without power for a week and half. I had a well which also meant I was without water.
It was awful.
Luckily this has been a really mild winter this year.
I've kept power the whole time.

I know, when we saw the damage done around here I couldn't believe it. I had never seen the actual aftermath of a tornado up close and personal before. Only saw in it all in papers or TV. It was almost like my mind couldn't take it in.
And as for your ex...let's not go there ;-)
