I was already feeling depressed before the election, but all I want to do is to throw myself on the floor and put my head under a pillow. I can't even smile. Usually, even when I'm feeling depressed I can hide it from most people, but the fellow in the office next to mine just poked his head in and tried to make stupid jokes... I know why -- I look like my best friend just died! And I feel like it, too.
My husband (who isn't even American) is angry about the election, but I don't know who to be angry at (51% of America?) and so I feel helpless, and as if nothing could ever make me feel happy again. I know it's the depression talking, but this is just sending me over the edge. Does anyone else feel this way? Triumphalist Republicans need not reply, please.

I can no longer watch the news. I've been morose. The only thing that makes life bearable now is that I live in an area where Kerry garnered about 75% of the vote, so there are lots of people to commiserate with. There are few Bush supporters here, even among those who traditionally identify themselves as Republicans.

I have been bummed all day about the election too. But I really feel sorry for my kids who will have to pay off the burgeoning deficit, my elderly clients who face a redesign of Medicare, my gay and lesbian friends who wanted to have the same rights as I have, my daughters who, should they get pregnant God forbid, may have the Federal government interfere with their right to choose how to treat their own bodies, everyone who breathes the air and is effected by global warming, my daughter who wants to study in Europe where increasing hatred for Americans threatens her safety, are among a myriad of other things to cry about. But I'm convinced that it won't be all bad. This is a great country where at least half of the populace thinks differently than conservatives. Where the courts, Congress, puplic opinon, world opinion and a vigilant press helps keep an administration from straying too far from the mainstream. I wish I could give you more hope than this.

Oh PC...I thought I was the only one who cried at Kerry's speech! sniff sniff.
I had therapy this a.m.., too, so I was pretty raw and open anyway.

I've been feeling a bit down & irritable all day. I yelled at the dog, slammed my finger in a door, dropped a bowl of pistachios and cursed.
I too don't really know where to direct my anger and frustration so it just comes out all over, like leaks in a garden hose.
I get this way when there is something dully painful lurking in my mind...it's the election! I'm reminded of a line from the book The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen: -- paraphrasing -- "like a cricket in the salad bowl, like a toothbrush in the toilet" ...that's how I feel; like there is something wrong and somewhat unfixable. We need a new toothbrush and a new salad...
Hopefully we'll all feel better tomorrow...

Thanks everyone who's responded -- and sympathized! I read an article in today's New York Times (in the New York region section if you're looking for it), and it sounds like we're not alone. I don't live in New York -- I'm in a very rural part of the US -- but it was good to know that there was an entire city mourning along with me.
I've made an appointment with a new therapist for tomorrow. I haven't been seeing anyone but my gp since I moved here 2 and a half years ago, so I guess it's time. I'm going to look into reassessing the meds question, too. I really feel as though I've been knocked over and out.
This is the end of the thread.
