My koi and two snails died

Posted by Poet on March 9, 2004, at 20:13:10

The koi stopped eating last week, and wasn't swimming, If a fish can look depressed, he did. We are in the process of buying a new house and the yard has room for a big pond. He was ten inches and growing. I guess he's swimming in a real big pond, now.

Two snails died, too. They weren't in the same tank, so it wasn't a disease, just fate, I guess.

(((hugs to you)))

My pets are my life so I know how it feels when you lose them. But I do find some solace in thinking that animals don't live in the past or the future ... their happyness is mainly tied to how they feel in the present. They don't care how long they live ... it doesn't bother them. So if you give them a good home, a happy life and lots of love, then you've given them all that they needed.

Its funny how in a way, for humans I hope there is nothing after you die ... but for pets ... perhaps I feel they "deserve" it more but I hope they end up in some sort of paradise where they can be happy forever.

I'm sorry for your loss. I can relate. It's always hard to lose a pet. I lost a turtle yesterday. Her name was "sleeping Beauty". At least that's what my daughter named her. I think she had poor health to begin with, the shell was too soft and she was always lethargic. she was also just a hatchling.

On the bright side, my daughter and I went out today and got a new one. This one is different. It's a semi aquatic turtle called an Ornate Wood Turtle. Pretty big. Very healthy and active. Much easier to take care of. Really nice complex markings. We named her "Morla" after Morla the Ancient One from The Neverending Story.

Good luck with the Koi pond. That's very cool.

I'm so sorry for your loss. We do love our pets. I'm glad you're going to have room for a pond at the new house.

I posted this on Grief last week but got no response so will tell you guys. I have four indoor cats. I was feeding four strays. One of them my granddaughter named "Loveheart". She was the prettiest tortoise shell....sweet, loving and met my truck every day when I drove up. I tried to integrate her with my indoor pets but she hated being in the house. She became very stressed and I knew it wasn't going to work now. So I decided that when I move back to the ranch, I would take her with us. Last Tuesday when I came home, her body was lying in my front yard. I was devestated. I thought of all the things I should have done. I've second guessed it over and over. I miss her so much. I haven't told my granddaughter because her cat died three weeks ago and she still cries about Spook. She is four.

Loveheart was the sweetest cat that I've ever met. (In the meantime, a man next door trapped all of the other strays, which were causing no trouble whatsoever, and took them to the shelter and had them put to sleep!! I fed them and they all hung out with three houses of us. None were having kittens....now our mouse population will skyrocket!)

I'm sorry about all of our losses. Animals are my main companions so I know how you feel. Pat

Strange that they went at the same time.

It always hurts when a pet is gone. I don't even want to entertain the thought of losing my "son."

I'm sorry you had 3 loses at the same time. Are you considering filling up the empty tanks now? Some vets suggest it and others don't. It may help your mood to have more pets back in your life. (Not suggesting replacing the old ones, jsut celebrating their lives with some new ones...)

I'm thinking about you Poet, along with half of Babbleland... Oh, when will I have time to think aobut my English proposal? I'll find time, don't worry. I'm a multitasker and frequently have racing thoughts, so I can think of all of Babble and my work at the same time....

Take care of you! I would if I were there..

Thanks everyone

My condolences to Jeff about your turtle, I hope you new turtle gets to be huge.

Fayroe, I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. I have three cats and would be heartbroken if anything happened to them.

Thanks all for understanding that it was a big fish and some snails, but it still made me sad. When we move we'll get another koi and some snails for the new pond. I'm going to drain the big tank and put it in the basement, so I don't have to look at it when I feed the other fish.

Poet, you are welcome. It doesn't matter to me what size, shape, species, age they are.....if they are loved, they will be missed.....I've had lots of tortoises and a few fish, even salamanders. They are all unique to us. Pat
