So I have been having a very low- low lately. one thing that has come out of it is that I see that my OCD is a cushion for when I enter a low.
My OCD is NOT the cleaning type, it's more repetitive thought and needing to keep my hands busy so they won't re-arrange lint in my pocket all day.
So I have this weird fascination by doing jig saw puzzles- trying to do them without thinking or planning.. and trying to do them fast at the same time. Sort of letting my fingers pick pieces up and put them in the right place without even looking around- very odd, I know, but so calming for me.
Second fascination, candles. Watching them burn, making sure they burn well.
Third, re-potting and pruning my plants. When I'm having a low, my plants become so important- I must groom them and make sure that they have the best living quality possible.
Forth(ly)- looking through TV shows, trying to count how many "little people" there are on TV. I have a phobia or something of little people (much like I do clowns, but not nearly as threatening as clowns) but i try to force myself to watch them and learn about them. Discover Channel has some great documentaries about the science behind little people that I made myself watch three times in a row... On Demand (like TiVo) is bad bad bad for OCD people, haha) Then I caught a little person on American Idol and almost called all my friends to let them know... then I stopped, thought about it- none of my friends are watching American Idol- and I wasn't about to hint at them that *I* would ever watch that kind of TV show- hahaha. Little people are everywhere.
Anyways, OCD is sort of helping me right now, in this low low place. It's like I'm a 5 year old who just saw a really scary movie and OCD is my blanket that makes me feel safe for a while. Never thought of my OCD in such a positive light before now. Guess my body doesn't totally hate me :)

I've noticed that myself. That OCD can serve a protective function. Most professionals seem to have forgotten that idea from old psychoanalytic theory. But I think there's a bit of merit to it.
I often find that a strong OCD surge signals the end to my depressed phase.

I hope that's what's going on with me too... the OCD definitely gets a little stronger everyday. I ever found myself walking backwards this morning (something I used to do when I was a kid if I forgot something as I was walking out the door) very weird, how the mind/body just kicks into another gear when it has too.... amazing huh?
Do you have any hints to some more healthy OCD thigns to do to keep me quiet? (Yup, got the ADD too) like puzzles and stuff? I can't read a book at this point, I can bearly work... I need something... like a rubix cube or something haha- I can imagine myself throwing the cube at someone's head right now... hehe

You may be interested to know that soon there will be a reality TV little people dating show. The bachelor and the bachelorettes will all be little people. Half way into the show they will introduce some taller women into the mix and see what happens. I am not making this up! I forget what network it will be on..

Lala, I have been watching A.I. for the first time...I never wanted to get caught up in "those shows". I still refuse to watch the Survivor things and the bachelor/bachelorette things.
Anyway I have an OCD that is not comforting as it involves pulling my hair out and I have to be very careful that I don't create a worse problem and more anxiety. If I tell myself don't do it it's like telling me not to think of a pink rhinocerous. It mostly happens when I am bored but it also seems to have reappeared because of the divorce, moving, living by myself for the first time ever.Oh and about you guys turning 25 and being bummed. I am 46 and wouldn't go BACK to being 25 for all the tea in China. I love what each new year brings me with respect to growth and experience and confidence. Not that my act is completely "together" but I do things more for myself now than for others.

Toots- you rock :) You are making me look forward to the birthday- that's a good thing :) I think the 20's are when people are scrambling to "get their lives together" and half of us (20somethings) don't even know who we are- so I think it causes stress. Personally, I think the 40s will be the best years- you have a much better idea of what you want and who you are. :)
I refuse to watch Survior and the marriage ones... but for some reason A.I. has my attention, no idea why.
It's funny that you mention your hair. I have always always rubbed my scalp with my fingers, ever since I can remember. But as I grew older, I realized that not everyone does that... and i realized that I do it when I'm bored or nervous. I dont actually pull it out, but do you think that the constant rubbing could cause my hair to thin? Hmmm... I never connected it to OCD- is it a normal OCD thing?

I haven't any good ideas I'm afraid. My OCD consists of thinking I've done something terrible that will bring disaster to my loved ones. I do have "enthusiasms" as well, which are far more pleasant and I think not unrelated to the OCD.
