I can feel it coming on already, in just little ways. There's already newspaper articles on all the tv coverage that's coming for 9/11. Larry King Live had Lisa Beamer on tonight. And CBS had a special on how a town is coping. Bookstores have books out.
I don't live in NY, or know anyone personally that suffered through or died on 9-11. But I f-e-e-l it and looking back, I went through a slump (now recognized as mild depression) that I couldn't seem to get out of, which lasted until around April when I started on Effexor XR.
I feel so much better since April, but I can feel myself slipping now. I worry about it getting worse as we all get closer to to 9/11.
How is everyone else here coping? and preparing?
Just ignore it? Accept it? Deal with it? And, how?
I've been told I have have a strong sense of empathy with others and strong sense of "needing" to right unjustices.
I haven't seen any posts here about 9/11 yet, but I feel like we probably all need some support group like this to help us.
At least I do.

>John,
Just cross your fingers and hope some bad BS doesn't happen next month. I remember last year donating blood-and I hadn't done that for a few years. My suggestion is to not watch TV!! Talk to real live people you know about it and ASK what they THINK about it and listen with your own ears. Remember that the news channels are in all of this for profit, unfortunately, and it isn't in your best interest to develop PTSD from their hyperbolizing and commercialization of the thing. I found that listening to the radio instead (especially NPR or the BBC)was a VAST improvement.

Hi John ..I am felling alot better now but still very sad...I am doing data entry work at work now (because my back injury prevents me from doing gas technician work ) I live in Ontario and I was completely out of this world shocked when 9-11 happened . When I come across a work sheet that has the date 9-11 on it , no matter what the year i get a visual in my head of that tradgedy...I feel for you and everyone that had a loss that day .. it impacted alot of the world and it also brings back the shuttle incident to mind ...we ask why us ?? I feel that alot of people have just put it in the back of there heads ...but to see that date or hear the word terrorism flashes a picture in my mind ,I'm sure there minds...We up here in Cananda wear tee-shirts (sold by the fire-department for support of the guys that were lost in NY)and will (I am sure I speak for alot of people here in Whitby Ontario)never forget those that not only gave there lives but died in this horrific act...God bless the world please!! Thanks again for your support

We all do it to some extent--dwell on things or worry about them before they happen. I had that problem with sleep. At 6:00 p.m., I'd worry about whether I'd be able to sleep. The worry kept me from sleeping. Then the worry started earlier in the day, and I never slept.
Find something else to occupy your mind. Don't read about it or watch TV, and DON'T talk to people about it. Try to focus on the positive things in your life right now. If it makes you feel better to join candlelight vigils and such, by all means do it! But my guess is that it will only contribute to your sense of dis-ease.
Thinking about it in advance, worrying that you will become depressed again because of a date on the calendar will likely seal your fate. So stop it now, 'kay?

I would not necessarily recommend this for everyone, but I have decided to visit some friends in NYC around that time. Furthermore, my flight into NYC will be on 9/11. Yes, that's right: I shall face it head on, and hope for the best.
Best regards,
Mr Beev

I'm not worried about facing the date 911 itself. I'm just starting to feel "low" now and I recognize this feeling creeping up on me. After 9/11/01 I had gradual downward spiral of sorrow that took me 6 months to acknowledge. Glad I finally went to my dr. and I'm getting back on track now, and want to stay there.
Anyone know how to find a support group in the Los Angeles area?

>I like that! I have had trouble with flying before. That would be an interesting *mission*, to help deal with panic. Book a flight on 9-11-02. I might just do that-maybe with an sublingual Ativan tab handy... Sounds like a lot of fun paradoxically. Maybe it is being defiant towards those who want to change and control our behavior.

Hello Robin,
I am filling in for Dr. Bob while he's on vacation. One of Dr. Bob's rules is not to use language that others might find offensive.
I'm not altogether certain who you are referring to as "him", and I won't make any assumptions about that.
I am including a link to Dr. Bob's civility guidelines:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
As a friendly warning since you're new to the site, if civility guidelines aren't followed after a warning, the next step is to be blocked for a week.
So you might wish to review the guidelines. :)
Thanks,

I remember telling my hubby last 9/11 that we
are about to see a nationwide attack of PTSD.
I think I was right. At first I thought the
tears that came so quickly--esp at "God Bless
America" were the symptoms. But PTSD comes
later. I would imagine the depression now
would probably fit.I understand how you feel. I have some good
and bad things coming up in Sept and yet 9/11
sits there in the middle as a big ugly bump.
And we relate special days to what happened
the year before. Lucky me, my birthday was
declared the National Day of Mourning. So
this year I'll also be relating to that.I agree with those who say don't watch too much
of it. I plan to watch on 9/11 to purge the
feelings. But all the "lead ups" are going
to be avoided. No need to get more depressed.
And I'm going out on a day other than my birthday
to avoid those memories. No "Day of Mourning"
this year (I hope!!).And Mr Beev---you are an awesome guy! I avoid
planes anyway, so to hear someone planning to
fly on 9/11, when we will be thinking about such
things as plane disasters, makes me admire you!

Of course, you may think otherwise upon seeing me clutching the seat in a death grip, my countenance a bilious colour - for I do not care for flying, to put it rather mildly.... My thought, however, is simple: if one allows terrorists to dictate one's lifestyle (within reason), then they have indeed triumphed.
Best regards,
Mr Beev

...........................I was driving to work yesterday and the weather was practically identical to what it was on that day, and I started remembering all of the *feelings* I was having then, going by gas stations and by the neighborhood fire station, etc. A feeling of sadness mixed with an adrenalizing deja vu thing. What makes it so oddly horrid is that the *weather* is so beautiful at this time of year.
This is the end of the thread.
