Proof

Posted by Bobby on July 26, 2002, at 15:18:48

I don't mean to flash a good time to hurt anyone but I feel,at times, that I am proof that you can come out off the bottomless abbyss. I only know that when i am down there--someones' light words make me feel better. should I feel bad--because I can be for sure. I hope that I don't sound self-righteous 'cause I'm superduper not.

I agree.

I completely agree. I also am not always depressed or overwhelmed. And to better try to defend my lighthearted posting, I was trying to help get this board back to what it sounded like it was before. So much tension so I thought I'd TRY to lighten it up a little with a question on social. I don't know why I'm trying to defend myself anymore... it's useless.
Okay, one last try to defend myself, and I think I'm done... When Katt posted about cutting, I didn't post to that thread because I'm not a cutter, I don't have that urge, I'm sorry she does, but I can't relate to that, so I let other PSB'ers support her. She didn't come after me - singling me out - for not supporting her. AngelGirl was in a deep dark pit of despair - a place I can't relate to at the moment and (this is probably going to come off as uncaring) I have so many of my own things (rough marriage/little kids - not to mention the Lou issues) right now that it's all I can do to keep upbeat for my kids. I'm not playing "victim" as she tried to deem me. If I was, I would post about my frustrations with my husband and every single thing in my life that wasn't going my way. I am truly, sincerely sorry that AngelGirl is upset right now, and that she's upset because apparently I didn't thank her the right way, or support her the way she needed it (apparently - FROM ME). I'm sorry if I seem self-absorbed right now. Right now I am trying to take care of me, which I don't do well anyhow.
Bobby, I look forward to your posts because they do show hope to those in that abyss. - Thank you.
*sigh*

And I say this respectfully, I do not agree.I also do not agree with your not being able to have a good time and knowing it helps and being criticized for it.

But, I think I've used this before: you can no more be sure of how someone feels, or what will make them feel better than you can know what the taste of an apple is to them.
Its like trying to use logic or proof to convince someone that they like the way something looks when they despise it. I know that I can prevent a relapse by having a good time.
I also know that during a major depressive episode I'm completely unable to feel pleasure. no amount of what I had previously considered fun will pull me out of it. NOTHING. The pleasure centre of my soul or brain, is paralyzed broken.

I know that you aren't trying to sound holier than though, and I mean this a lot more lightly and affectionately than it will look in type I'm sure but I reality is subjective.
'We don't see things as they ARE but as we are'. Thought sounds so definate as to be a contradiction of my point.

Having a great time is therapy; what it consists of is personal. Why try and convince someone that a cure for you is a cure for everyone.

And not pertaining to your letter.
Is it not a bit unreasonable to have people posting on a board devoted to mental illness (a bandaid term I know) to not show symptoms of it in their posts.

And no the party is not girls only its for Women only. :):):)
No its for everyone... read the open invitation.
Thanks again for the nice letter last night.
Talk soon.
UH oh .... Princess Gabbi needs to knocked from her throne.NOW.

I can see it from Bobby's view. I do see there is a way out, which is why I haven't actually been hospitalized for attempting suicide. I don't mean that to sound light, because attempting it and getting saved from it (I'm sure) is harsh and can be disappointing (as you have voiced you were). I believe that when you talk to someone (on here, in person, in a hospital) that has been there... whether it be for alcohol or mental issues, and you know that they made it... *I* believe that gives a glimmer of hope, or as Bobby said, "Proof" that one can get through it. Not to say there won't be another hole around the corner, but just know that they are episodes. There are good days and bad days. Life goes on, if you let it.

Oh I'm just saying that I know I can't laugh my way out from the bottom. Any more than a schizophrenic could be convinced verbally that the C.I.A. is not out to get him. (though I'm sure there are exceptions to that to
I'm not saying I can't be reminded of hope. But all I can do is wait for the depression to pass, and remember that I once was able to feel hope, but yet not be able feel it. You know, its not like just tell me the right joke and I'll feel fine that my family has been murdered. But I don't think thats what Bobby meant anyway. Really the only thing I meant to say is that you can't know uniquivocally what will or would have helped someone. You can only be sure of what works for you, and many others.
And besides today my nickname should be Princess Pontificate its all due to this toffee nosed accent I have in my head.

thank's sandra for backing me up although I must take up for Gabbi--she's stepped up to the plate for me before. But there must be something here that offsets the sometimes somber mood. It's a ying and yang thing I suppose. Don't take me too seriously please. Bobby

I did sound really heavy didn't I? I really didn't mean too. Its not a matter of sticking up for you... I wasn't criticizing you, I just sounded like an overbearing git.

I just meant that there is no way anyone can be inside someones head. We are all different. And I must say that what you said does work for most people. I just have a personal pet peeve from long before you, about "proof" defined by one's personal experience. Once again I'll blame it on my mom.
I didn't mean you committed a serious offence your letter actually sounded pretty casual and self-deprecating. (not that putting your self down is necessarily healthy) But I know you didn't mean to sound heavy handed
you made a point of saying that.

Oh lets just forget it shall we...
I liked the other letters much better. And my deepest sympathies to you regarding your wifes purple fetish. Its an odd thing, people who love purple LOVE it everywhere. It seems its the one color in decorating that people love or hate
I hate it. (in decorating) How old is your son?

Thanks for doing that. IMO, that's what we need, people trying to keep us on track...
