I came across this forum while I was looking up a phrase my counsellor used (manic defence) and it looked good. Being wary (paranoid?) I checked it out to make sure it was safe before registering. I'll be really interested to see if it can help me understand more about what on earth is wrong with me. 4 years of counselling/therapy and 1 year in AA and I still feel pretty mad. A lot, lot better than I was but still struggling with all sorts of stuff.
It's nice to be here.

Hmm. I haven't heard that one before. Did you find it? What does it mean?

Well... I hope we can help. I've found people here really helpful. Far more helpful than the majority of professionals I have encountered (don't even get me started on that)...
You might want to check out the psychology board and the substance board (if you haven't already)

> Welcome :-)Thanks Alexandra - as far as I can make out manic defence means keeping so manically busy that you avoid your feelings/thoughts - I'm sure that's way too simplistic an explanation - couldn't find much about it that I understood!
It's 3.30 am, I have the christmas blues and would love to be able to sleep!!!! 7 months without alcohol and I'm still not sleeping. Oh well, at least I don't wake up with hangovers.

Hi Alexandra - I'm doing ok but hurt my back this week so am forced into being more reflective and ceased running around like a headless chicken. I suppose most people with 'mental health' issues get down at Christmas time. Still sober at 8 months now. I couldn't have done this without the support of AA, my therapist and my partner. Alcohol is a great suppressant - but it bites back eventually! How are you?

Hey. Sorry about your back - back pain can be a hard thing to cope with. Still, I think being reflective sometimes can help a bit in the sense that if you run around like a headless chicken too much then you can crash eventually... Sounds like you are getting something of an enforced holiday?
Yeah, I think christmas is a hard time for a lot of people out there. Especially when family relationships are hard. And I guess a lot of people with mental health issues have tricky family relationships which probably has a fair bit to do with why it is that they have mental health issues lol.
>Still sober at 8 months now.
That is really great :-) I've never been much of a drinker... But I've been there with drugs. And it can be really very hard to lay off the stuff. Even when you know that long term it is only harming it can be really hard to get past that short term high. 8 months is really great :-) You hang in there with that.
> How are you?
I'm doing alright. Just kind of ticking along...
Nice to chat with you :-)
This is the end of the thread.
