gaining weight?

Posted by honeybee on June 9, 2006, at 15:47:50

Does anyone have any recommendations for gaining weight? This is embarrassing; I'm rather underweight as a result of the depression, not always feeling motivated to eat--which I'm working on, maybe the brain, when depressed, really does burn up more calories, etc. But there's so much dietary advice out there that I'm a bit stymied by the best way to gain weight. I'm looking for something along the lines of ten pounds. And just general guidelines. I don't want to go gonzo with some kind of diet that will send me back into obsessing about what I put into my mouth again.

Was thinking I should see what Renee Zellweger did for that Brigit Jones' thing...

Suggestions? This is a bit new to me as I have a long history of bulemia and anorexia. Finally am somehow done with that, but I'm just flummoxed on how to actually gain....

I've had the same experience. I think first look at your diet and see if you're eating non-food,that is diet products or lite whatever and replace them with real food.

I think a good way is to add healthy fats like olive oil and nuts and whole grain or starch vegetables. And try to exercise a little so you'll be hungry. Just concentrate on being healthy and your weight will stabilize eventually. I think it's a good idea to avoid "treat" type foods that will have to be given up when you reach your normal weight.

I've also used Ensure type supplements when I was extremely depressed but I think usually real food is better if you can manage it.

great advice. I agree. Focus on being healthy instead of gaining weight. Also, if you exercise, you will build muscle, which could add a few pounds (muscle weighs more than fat...). Eating healthy and exercising will make you stronger, which is most important. :)

I had stopped exercising because I was worried I would burn too many calories and end up skinnier. Any thoughts on that?

When horses are underweight, we exercise them regularly, so that they'll gain. They don't gain nearly as well if we reduce their exercise. So, I'd extrapolate from there, and say that regular exercise would help. Not intense exercise, I think, just regular exercise.

Hope that helps.

Really? Cool.

Part of the reason I'd stopped exercising was because I was losing weight and didn't want to increase that. I'll step it up again--moderately!

Thanks, everyone.

My doc has always told me losing weight is about calories in vs. calories out. Unless you're burning more than you're eating, I don't think exercise will be a problem. :)
