I've just started taking ziziphus for sleep and it seems to be working after trying almost everything else. I like the idea of it because it also tones your spleen and liver, and these too are weak spots for me.
When I try something new, like Reishi for instance, it worked great and then, a month later, starts having the opposite effect and keeps me awake, even though my dosage is around 1/6 of the recommended. With St Johns that was awesome for 4 whole months again at a small dose until I became so light sensitive I couldn't watch TV without wearing sun glasses.
So my question is, has anyone tried ziziphus (Chinese jujube date) for any length of time? And if so, how was it for you? Any side effects?

It's the best. I have the highest opinion of it. But because of my long term benzo thing I needed a lot, although my son needed decent doses to help him sleep before exams. He had been in the habit of looming in our room at 2am and asking for something to help him sleep, and once or twice I gave him half a Valium, but I thought, bugger this, I can't do this to him, so I bought zizyphus tincture in 500ml bottles. So yeah, our doses were above 6g.
It is in a lot of TCM formulas as well.
I noticed no change in effect over time. It is very mild.

I've tried this in an herbal combo made by Dr Zhang. It is combined with schizandra. The combo is intended for sleep. In a clinical study it performed as good as prescription sleep meds except without side effects or hangover. Dr Zhang uses it for insomnia in treating lyme.

Thanks both for your replies. Most of the stuff I've tried raised GABA, but that's not my problem. In fact I get that "I'm relaxed but I can't sleep" sensation, more light headed, when i take GABA, or Valerian for instance. I really think my dopamine is too high (because I've been taking vitex), so am looking forward to receiving my ziziphus in the post, which is standardised (as I believe the quality can vary a lot), and see how we go.
This is the end of the thread.
