Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone has used Deplin and found that the dose is too high and has instead gone the Metafolin way bought at a health food store and have found a sweet spot at a lower dose? Many thanks,
Joseph

> JosephHey,
I did go this route, due to cost, and played around with lower dosages. I went as high as 4 mg, maintained at 3.2 for a time, and ended up dropping to 1.8 when I felt nothing. So, sorry, no sweet spot. Can't say Deplin doesn't work for me, but that wasn't an experiment I could run. Low dose Metafolin seems to do nothing for me, however. Still, for the cost, and considering Merck is going to push it behind the counter soon, it's worth trying, I think.

So basically the pharmaciticl industry is taking over supplements or making them in high doses that require a script? BTW how high was the deplina as say 15mg if the right dose per Susan Whalin on meds from the drug company Deplin. I tried it noticed nothing at 7.5mg Deplin that is. Phillipa

Well, I wouldn't say that Big Pharma is taking over supplements, but with l-methylfolate they managed to reclass it as a medical food and make it script only, and jack the price in the process. Merck owns the patent to Metafolin, which is still sold as an OTC supplement, but I think it is going to be script only soon also. It's pricey to try to recreate the Deplin dosage with Metafolin, and I didn't even get close to 7.5, let alone 15 mg, which is supposedly superior for a lot of people.

I've also posted on the medication board but I feel that the 7.5 may be too high a dose for some. I do think that Deplin has potential but in my case, I could not sleep at all when I took a 7.5 mg tablet. I also began to get numbness and burning sensations in my feet which I never experienced before. When I discontinued the Deplin after one week, the burning sensations gradually went away as well. It seems to me like there is a lot of pushing going on about Deplin from reps and people that work for/with the company. This makes me concerned. Also, perhaps because it is considered a medical food, it does not have to go through the standard safety testing from the FDA.
