Hi All,
I thought I would take some time to post some findings with my Adderall tolerance--something that seems to come up frequently in this group. First, I should state that I have been taking Adderall for just over a year at the dose of 20 mgs per day, instant release, one in the morning and once in the afternoon. Needless to say, my tolerance has hit the absolute "this medicine doesn't work" point.
In fact, you know that you have hit major tolerance when stopping the medication produces zero side effects...there is no difference on or off the medication. At least that has been my experience.
So I started searching around on the net and found some interesting information about tolerance and ADD (I have inattentive type), in regards to natural supplements. First let me state that I am NOT trying to sell anything, I simply wanted to share some success I have had with them.
I will also start by saying that my adderall tolerance has not necessarily gone away, but I have managed to obtain more focus, energy, and motivation despite the tolerance. I believe that I may be maximizing what little Adderall I currently take and augmenting with a good cocktail of supplements. It would require me to do a massive post to show all of my findings but if you search on NMDA Antagonists and Adderall you can probably come across something.
Like I said earlier, this week I have been super-focused, alert, awake, motivated, and feeling fairly good about life. Having inattentive type produces just the opposite when completely untreated. I basically went out and spent around $100 at the vitamin store and developed the following regimen:
Country Life's Beyond Food Multi (4 daily)
GNC Fish Body Oil 1000 mg (2 daily)
Source Naturals Ultra-Mag (1 daily)
Vitamin Shoppe Vinpocetin (1 daily)
L-theanine 100mg (2 daily)
Huperzine A with Ginko (2 daily)If you want to try this combo, please make sure that nothing mixes badly with your current meds or condition. Nothing sucks worse than anaphylactic shock from an allergy (I know because I have been there).
So why does this stuff work? I don't completely understand but I do know that Magnesium, L-Theanine, and Huperzine are apparently all NMDA antagonists which help prevent adderall tolerance. Again, Google this for details. Magnesium in particular has shown to be out of balance in people with ADD, and can supposedly help the body retain stims for longer than normal periods of time. This was my exact experience when I started the magnesium...I seemed to be "on" all day long after only taking 10mg of Adderall. That was Monday, it's now Friday and I am still "On". So much so that I have been awake late most nights from the excess energy. THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR ME AT ALL. I am crediting some of this to my cocktail. I would love to see if anyone else can try this and report their findings.

How many milligrams of Magnesium are you taking? And what form is it (Mg Citrate, Mg Glycinate, Mg Taurate, Mg Oxide or something else)?

I am taking 400 to 800 mg a day. The brand I use called Source Naturals is a mix of citrate, taurinate, glycinate, succinate and malate.
That about covers them all I think with the exception of oxide which doesn't absord much.
Take care

This is a five year post followup on this thread. I am 40 year old female with fibromyalgia and inattentive ADD.
Concerta did not work for me, I was so sleepy I could have planted my face on the sidewalk! The extended release RX for ADD don't work for me. I am now on Adderall quick release. The first month was profoundly life changing! Now, two months into Adderall and I'm losing the positive effects. It's gone, nada, nothing! In fact, now that I know what it's like to have a clear/organized mind... I am worse!!!! The only other med I am taking is 30mg Cymbalta.
I have a feeling this is an NMDA issue!
Anyone else with same experiences in 2010? Of course this post is very old. I hope a combo of Magnesium and possibly Huperzine A might help. What doses are others taking? I have talked to my doctor about Neurontin but he is worried it may cause me to gain a lot of weight. I just lost 20 lbs. Please share your thoughts! Much appreciated!
This is the end of the thread.
