What's a good brand/dose of magnesium?

Posted by qbsbrown on August 3, 2009, at 22:25:26

I'm going through a brutal benzo withdrawal.

My anxiety is horrible, insomnia, as well as muscle spasms/soreness/tightness.

I've read that this may be helpful.

I appreciate the recommendations.

Please only list brands and dosages for magnesium, and not other vitamins/supps/herbs.

Greatly appreciated!

Brian

I buy Magnesium Citrate powder, you can get it from such places as bulknutrition (usa) and myprotein (uk). The dosage is one teaspoon which is about 450mg. Always start with a low dosage of Magnesium as it can cause loose bowels. Some people find Magnesium too stimulating at night time, so I take it in the day as a precaution. I'm using it for general stress problems, and not benzo withdrawal though. You should also research Niacinamide which is a form of vitamin B3, which is supposedly helpful in benzo withdrawal.

Your question is 2 weeks old...but if you're still interested:

Cardiovascular Research Brand magnesium taurate is my first choice for magnesium. Capsules are 125 mg of magnesium, so I'd start with 3/day, see how it feels and then add more if necessary. In my experience and from what I've read, this type of magnesium is the least likely to give diarrhea. (Mag citrate is #1 in that dep't for me.)

Second choice would be Magnesium Glycinate, Carlson's brand. They come in 200 mg tablets, I believe, so at least two a day.

I've tried many forms of magnesium and these are the most calming, because they are chelated with amino acids that are themselves calming, as I understand it, with the mg glycinate perhaps being more calming than the taurate. But as usual, YMMV.
