broccoli, other green leafy veges..like darker green leaves in lettuces, other green veges I guess too.. would need to check how much is in them, I dont eat grass or algae :)

kelp - one to two inches a day, I get this from the beach and dry it so I hope it doesnt have too many heavy metals etc

sardines - one 100g tin every cuple of weeks on average

pilchards- well I tried a couple again, too strong flavoured..or maybe just too salted fro me how I had them

other fish, crab, seafood, calamari.. yep, if i can get it fresh ( seasonal, like when I catch some or neara trawler, or find some fresh somewhere.. got some good fresh seafood in BN) .. maybe not great sources but must contain a little

kangaroo meat should be real high in it- they eat grass

other grass fed meat.. lamb, beef(non grain fed), milk, cream, butter, cheese

walnuts (yes they also contain omega6's as well as omega 3's... everything does? it's just different ratios)

flaxseed maybe once a week (ground if possible or some whole), if I could get non rancid oil that'd be good

fish oil.. maybe 2 or 3 caps a week max, just as a top up to help bring level up

some omega-3 (DHA?) added in the bread (Omega3 UP) I eat sometimes.. they are trying too get a bit balanced back, a marketing angle

NO idea how much or what my balance is, I'm sure it could be better BUT the main point is the ratio of omega6:omega3 oils , so cutting back on omega6's (like soy oil, sunflower, safflower and other grain based oils ..like margarine etc is just as important if not more so)
I hope my balance is getting there, but I'm sure its still not in the 1:1(ideal) to 1:4 (max) range (omega3:omega6).

Tealady, do you mind if I ask you a question?

Case 1:
You do? Nevermind then... Sorry for asking! So sue me! Everybody, just sue me! Sue me, do me, kick me, strike me! You all hate me anyway, don't you! ***

Case 2:
You don't? Gr8, and thanks!!! (((tealady))) OK, here goes...

Do you think 6000 mg / day fish oil is too much?

I am noticing both good and bad things happening to me since I started my 6000 mg / day regimen; previously I had taken only 3000 mg / day.

Klavot

*** = not for real, just joking, do not take offence.

Could you tell us specifically what the good and bad things are? Thanks.

Well, it's all somewhat vague and subjective:

Good: better control over emotion, generally happier, more optimistic

Bad: abdominal cramps, constant craving for coffee

None / some / all of these might be coincidental. It just worries me slightly that I am technically overdosing on fish oil, according to medical establishment.

It depends?? LOL

on how much you weigh. (would be correlated to weight)

on how old you are (younger could take more as a faster metabolism etc)

on where you live (colder climate can burn up more oils more easily as fuel)

on how long you are taking this dose

on your symptoms..

What happens is every species has this range for every membrane in their body.. it varies, and as you probably know brains have a higher omega 3 range. (so eating brains should provide a high omega 3 diet, .. nothing else considered here!)
The thing is even if we pigged out on massive amounts of omega 3's our membranes will stay within this given range for our species and their type of tissue etc.

So when we first start on omega 3 oils, I'd guess that we would gradually replace the omega 6's and other lipid parts of of membranes..and possibly other hormones as well like thyroid hormones in membranes and other stuff like cholesterol etc etc.. in other words our membrane composition would gradually change over time, towards a more "normal" human ratio.
During this time I'd guess the excess omega 6's released from the membrane would go into the bloodstream for starters.. so taking a large dose for starters is not so bad..

So it depends how LONG as well you take a high dose.. a membrane change can be detected after a week or so in studies and may change for months

BUT mostly it depends on what else you eat!.. like how much vegetable shortening, vegatable oils(like soy, sunflower, safflower, mixed vege oil etc). margarine etc as its the ratio that counts more than the total amount..
that said too much oil or too little oil is bad for us too (as everything in diet)

err It depends?? AND listen to your symptoms.. they are trying to tell you something, as well as your desire to consume these foods(oils).. if you gagg at it or have symptoms like acne etc..your brain/body is probably trying to tell you something and maybe a gentler approach (less fish oil)and a cutback of omega6's is the better way to go

...unfortunately for me maybe I have never hated anyone.. I can't understand some peopleat all, and some people I cannot describe or understand and they give me shivers thinking about or upset me but ..

Hi,
I take 2500 mg of fish oil per day which provides 1250 mg of DHA and 500 mg of EPA. It's Ultra Omegas DHA/EPA from Country Life.

Thanks for posting Liz.
Is that amount symptom free for you? like no increase in acne, or any other BAD symptoms..and also do you notice any benefits?

I was hoping I didn't kill the thread.. I seem to have that effect I think sometimes:(

It would be great if everyone who takes fish oil (or krill oil if you can get it) could post how much they take and any good/bad effects they notice.
It should give us all an idea of a range to aim for for an average female/male:-)
I don't tolerate much at all, but as I mentioned I try to finish of the bottle at least by taking two or 3 capsules a week. I seem to be able to get away with that.. I do have to take it with my 'oiliest' meal of the day though to aid absorption and lessen any digestive effects.
I'm hopeful it should all add up to help go in the right direction.

I think it's side effect free for me, but I can't be sure. I began taking fish oil when I was on Parnate (MAOI AD)but knew I'd be going off it, so any side effects I may have from FO I am likely to attribute to not being on an AD anymore... I don't have any acne or digestive problems from the FO.
As for benefits, I think it is very definitely an AD for me. My HDL (good cholesterol) has gone up tremendously, so that's a plus, albeit a non-psychaitric one.
Hope this helped some!
