My custom blend for sleep/anxiety

Posted by MoparFan91 on August 29, 2005, at 16:45:57

Very recently, I've been taking GABA bonded w/ Niacinamide and Inositol. I used 750mg GABA caps from GNC. I seem to get somewhat a calming after taking it when I bond it w/ those.

So, I considered doing was devising a "Stack" for dissipating anxiety and helping me sleep through the night. Here's what the "Stack" will involve:

Customized name of my stack-

Sleeper's GABA Stack

Total of 3,200mg of ingredients per serving

Ingredients-

1,500mg of GABA --|
Bonded with all of the following:
500mg Niacinamide
500mg Inositol
500mg Taurine
200mg 5-HTP
0.75mg Melatonin

Functions:

This stack should help with sleep, anxiety & racing thoughts, and maybe some depressive symptoms.

The inositol and niacinamide help the GABA get into the blood brain barrier. GABA is calming and helps keep the brain from going into overdrive. It is implicated in bipolar mania, anxiety, and insomnia. GABA by itself doesn't cross the blood brain barrier very well so it needs to be bonded with other stuff. The Taurine enhances the function of the GABA and reduces glutamate (also implicated in bipolar). Another importance for Taurine in reducing glutamate levels is that glutamate is evil when it comes to depression! 5-HTP helps in production of serotonin which is helpful for sleep, some forms of anxiety, obessions/compulsions, and depression. Melatonin provides the hormones to initiate sleep. This should be a great combo for a good Serotonin and GABA boost for anxiolytic and sleep-inducing effects.

What do you think of this?

Anyone ever tried a combo or anything similar to this?

Did it do anything?

Also, the nightime dose of magnesium taurate I take should synergize well with this stack.

All of this will be taken right before sleep.

What do you think of something like this?

There's magnesium glycinate isn't there. Might be a thought. Nice combo really, it's just ordering all the stuff...

I have some of that. I took that form for a while. However, George Eby on his Magnesium website doesn't recommend that form of magnesium anymore. He recommends the Taurate. He said that the Glycinate component interfered with Taurine for some reason or something.

I spread my Magnesium Taurate in four doses throughout the day. I 125mg in the morning, noon, evening, and bedtime.

Anyway, for anyone interested, my mood stabilizing cocktail consists of the following. I'm bipolar-NOS with ultra-rapid/ultradian cycling, ocd, social phobia:

Lamictal 300mg AM
Topamax Titrating to 100mg (3 divided doses)
Abilify 2.5mg AM
Magnesium Taurate 125mg four times a day
Omega 3 3,000mg three times a day
Sleeper's GABA Stack (customized) 3,200mg bedtime

This is kind of off topic, although I am going to be trying Taurine in the next couple of days and what you posted about it seems hopeful...But how is the Topamax working for you? I seem to have cognitive problems from Trileptal (or maybe Klonopin) and I'm not sure it's working so great so I'm thinking about trying another MS. Thanks,
MM

I just started on 50mg of Topamax today. I'm taking it for residual ultradian (several times a day) bipolar cycling. I read a study that Topamax should help OCD and intrusive thoughts (which I have problems with). The study said that high glutamate levels is linked to OCD.

Anyway, with Topamax, I have no cognitive problems so far. I'm starting to notice a little reduction in appetite, and sodas taste somewhat flat. No other side effects, though. I seem to feel a little calmer so far. I think this GABA stuff will complement the Topamax pretty well since Topamax also hits GABA pretty hard from what I've read here.

Well, last night was the first night for use of my customized GABA supplement blend (known as the Sleeper's GABA Stack). I took it at about 10:30 p.m.

After about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, I became sleepy and a little sedated, so I went to bed. I fell asleep fairly readily. But. possibly due to the Abilify I was taking, I woke up four hours later. However, I managed to get to back to sleep 1/2 hour later and slept for another 4-5 hours. I woke up at 9:30 a.m. pretty refreshed and motivated. I did feel a very slightly hungover and a little sleepy at first in the morning/midday, though, but overall, I felt pretty good and clear headed.

Overall, this stack seems to show some promise.

I've always seemed to get some insomnia from Abilify, though. I may probably see about reducing dose to 2.5mg every other day. Abilify has a 75 hour half-life which is long enough to even permit every other day dosing.

This is the end of the thread.
