HELP WITH HOMOCYSTEINE

Posted by vitaqueen on June 22, 2005, at 15:47:31

I don't know what may be causing my homocysteine to rise. I got it down from 13.5 to 9.8, and now four months later it's up to 11.1.

I take religiously every day -- 800 Folic Acid, 100 mg Complex B, and 500 mg TMG. My diet is low in fat too, except for olive oil and the fish oil products I'm taking.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I'm confounded and desperate!!!!!

You could take the folic acid way higher than 800mcg/d, so long as you cover it with plenty of B12. TMG could go up too. Do you find TMG stimulating? I think I'd double the dose of TMG and triple the dose of folic acid and B12. You might need to get the sublingual form on its own. And then retest.

So take 1200 folic, or 2400, and 1000 TMG? I'm taking 100 mcg B-12, but it's in a complex with other B's (etc.). Is that sufficient? Are there any symptoms I should be aware of if I'm overdoing any of these supplements? Are there any foods I should be eating, or avoiding???

TMG stimulating? In what way? I don't notice anything. Perhaps when I up the dosage.

Thank you so much for responding. Do you also happen to know what else I could take with my Red Yeast Rice to lower cholesterol? I got it down from 498 to 318 on 2400mg/day. Is it safe to take more? Can I add Niacin and guggulsterones safely? I read somewhere that Inositol can also aide in lowering homocysteine, so could the Niacin help for this too?

I'm so grateful to have found this site and all you wonderful and helpful people. I certainly hope Larry is feeling better. He must have really been hit hard. My prayers to him.

Thanks again, Declan.

Hi VQ
TMG stimulating? Some people seem to find it so, not sure myself. 1000mg is quite OK.
Folic Acid. Can you get it in tablets on its own? I think in Australia it is available in 5mg tabs on script. 800mcg with every meal is OK.
B6. We forgot this. In order to avoid peripheral nerve toxicity keep doses of this below 500mg/d. (Sounds like a lot eh?)
B12. Do you just take this to prevent anaemia which can be masked by the folic acid?? You won't take too much of that anyway.
B complex. To cover the above B vits.
All of this information is what I remember from the LEF.....www.lef.org. They have protocols there.
I dunno anything about cholesterol and red yeast. I did take the guggul thingo for a bit. There is some suggestion that in aging peple the increase in cholesterol is your body's attempt to counter falling hormone levels.

I do get the tablets (400mcg); so you're saying it's okay to take 2400/day?? I also get 400 mcgs in my B-Complex (see below). Are there symptoms I should be aware of if I'm taking too much?

The B-complex I am taking now includes the following co-factors: 100 mg each of B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, PABA, Choline and Inositol, and 100 mcg of B12 and Biotin, plus the aforementioned 400 mcg of Folic Acid. The reason I'm taking this, at least I think so, is also to reduce stress. Do you have any better suggestions, for instance, should I take the Bs separately? This just seems like a good way, and cheaper, to get everything in one.

Thank you, I will check out this site.

I believe I have heard this before too. I refused to take any HRT prescribed pills. Is there something natural to help combat falling hormone levels?

Much obliged again, Declan.
