Mr Hsuing, please consider allowing posters to request and receive blocks. It seems like it would be a win win situation. For instance Ms derHeart would have been spared emotional distress if you had acceded to her request at once rather than prolonging the process. And you would be spared administrative decision making, formulaic calculations etc etc etc
There are many reasons why one might wish to be blocked from the board. Are there any reasons why you refuse to do this? (You informed me by email that this was not your policy.)
As Ever
Homely

Perhaps Dr. Bob has an intense regard for free will. He believes we can make the choice to post civilly. He believes we can make the choice to stay away from Babble if we choose.
Perhaps he does not wish to encourage us to believe we are powerless to control our impulses.
Not that I can or wish to speak for him. It's just an idea.

As long as there is a possibility of posting there is an element of membership. It's like a club you can't get out of. If you join a book club and it evolves into the Hitler youth and they won't take you off the membership rolls etc etc etc.
Of course one may stop coming to meetings but still one wishes to repudiate the organization formally you know?
I think it's more about control than about respect for free will.
Would you support such a choice for those of us who want it?

I see no harm in allowing people to deregister their name and password. Even if the name would thereafter be "retired", which I think would be necessary. It would be too confusing if someone else were to be able to post as HomelyCygnet. I think that's why he doesn't allow deregistration.
However, that's different from voluntary blocks. Voluntary blocks, I think, could be seen as infantilizing. Which doesn't mean I haven't asked for them, and won't ask for them in the future.

To be clear, in requesting my blocks, I was saying to Dr. Bob that I was powerless to stop posting myself, and that I needed him to make it impossible for me to post.
Dr. Bob was responding that he didn't accept my powerlessness. That he believed I did have the power to post or not as I saw fit.
He was wrong, but I saw his point.

This would be sufficient for my purpose. Thanks for pointing out the terminology mistake.

Which doesn't mean I haven't asked for them, and won't ask for them in the futureI wouldn't see it as infantalizing just a another time/stress management tool for people who want it. It really doesn't concern me. I want to end my membership not manage it.

Seems fair enough. I second the request.
