Searching on Pbabble

Posted by Jost on November 11, 2006, at 12:30:25

I still find the Search on this site to be very hard to use.

Everything ithe results are chaotic--; posts are interspersed with threads-- and often if I look for something, all I get is the main page on which the thread is somewhere-- To find it, I 'd need to open every thread on the page--

or at least all threads that had my search terms in them-- which sometimes is a lot.

or the poster whom I"m trying to check on- eg if someone is talking about a med, I might want to see how it affected them, or others, in the past-- and I get hundreds of posts/threads/main Pbabble pages-- all mixed together

Is there some way to

1. have the threads/posts sorted chronologically
2. have only posts listed
3. do a comprehensive search for a poster, within a certain time frame, or a subject within a time frame?

Note: I've tried this and it invariably comes with with no posts- or off-topic posts-- even though I know I've read posts on the topic before

Somehow, I think the search function here doesn't work terribly well. It seemed better in the past, when it wasn't hooked up to google--

for one, thing, it mostly yielded individual posts--

At least when I used to come here, I mostly did searched for information on meds-- and it was helpful-- Now searches tend to be less helpful than one supposed they would be--somehow. I'm glad they're there (thanks for having them and the archives)-- but they could be so much more a source of important information.

At one time, Dr. Bob, you talked about having a way to look for posts by individual posters. I wasn't fond of the idea at the time, but given the large number of boards now it might be time to revisit the idea. Is it a difficult thing to do?

I agree with above I've searched sometimes by poster name and the whole page of that time period appears. It would take a long time to find what you're looking for. If the poster's name could only appear? Sometimes that happens. Othertimes the same keeps reappearing. Takes up a lot of space too. Thanks Love Phillipa

Not that I know of. Though in theory you could do so yourself, copy and paste the results into another program and then sort them by post number...

> 2. have only posts listed

Try adding "inurl:html" (without the quotes) to the search...

> 3. do a comprehensive search for a poster, within a certain time frame, or a subject within a time frame?

You can search for a poster with "poster:xxx". And within a year (kind of) by adding the year. And within a month that year by spelling out the month...

I feel the same way, but the old way was taking up a lot of space. But they give me more space now, so I suppose it might be an option to go back...
