Dr. Bob, if I ever get blocked again, could you include that bit about seeking help in real life when in crisis? Maybe you don't care enough about me to include that bit, but I really don't want a future block to trigger one of my crises. I don't want to do stupid things like hurt myself, kill myself or e-mail you threats.
I'm going to try really hard to think of the hug if I ever get blocked again, but I might forget when I discover that I'm blocked. I sort of "lose it" sometimes.
I understand if you won't include that bit in your blocking post because it might show caring, but I think it's worth it in my case. It's such a simple thing to do and it's likely to prevent all sorts of horrible things.
Just so you know, I'm planning on never getting blocked again. I'm rewarded every week for being civil by your new blocking system. It gives me a lot of hope for the future.

The blocks still get doubled or tripled, but now the time in-between blocks is used to reduce the block before doubling or tripling.
Here is a recent example:
Dr. Bob wrote:
previous block: 2 weeks
period of time since previous block: 4 weeks
particularly uncivil to other posters: no
different type of incivility: no
clearly didn't understand PBC and made effort to reply: no
provoked: no
uncivil in multiple posts at same time: no
already archived: noIf we take 4 weeks, divide by 10, and round down, that's a reduction of 0 weeks. If we apply that to your previous block, that's 2 - 0 = 2 weeks. And if we double that, that's 4 weeks.
----------------------------------------
My previous block was 4 weeks about 19 weeks ago. If I were blocked today, Dr. Bob would divide 19 by 10 to give 1.9.Dr. Bob, would you round the 1.9 up or down? Please be nice and follow the rules of rounding.
If he rounds it to 2 he'll take the 4 weeks and subtract 2 to give 2. Then he would double 2 to give 4 weeks for my block. If it were particularly uncivil, he might triple it to give 6 weeks.
After 40 weeks, I would definitely have a clean slate.
In the past, there was no way to reduce the block, no matter how much time passed between blocks. That left me pretty hopeless about my future here on Babble. For example, if I made a mistake in 5 years, my block would be doubled to 8 weeks.
Now, I'm rewarded for being civil for long periods of time. It makes Babble feel much safer, to know that if I make in mistake in 5 years, I would only have a block of 1 week.

Deneb,
Thanks so much for explaining the new rules to me. It is an improvement. I have to admit though that I feel dismayed. I guess I had a false hope there there had been a more substantial reform of the blocking rules in light of the Estella incident. Thanks for your reply.
warm regards, Jake.
