Hi Racie!

The pic is Deneb's handiwork - see 'social'.

I don't know what Freud would say, but I say that Dr. Bob must be a Flower Child, a child of the '60's (the 1960's, that is). All he needs now are bell-bottoms, love beads, granny glasses, and a reefer.

I think the message is a kind one -- Dr. Bob appreciates Deneb's handiwork, maybe wants her to recognize that he doesn't hate her, and also has an offbeat sense of humor. I like the picture - I think it encourages us to look at the world of the boards with a gentle humor and not to put ourselves on a pedestal. (Not that most of us do that, though!) I also think it's cool b/c it's a (somewhat) rare example of Dr. Bob interacting with us, sort of!

I am curious about something. Why do so many posters try to engage Dr. Bob in some sort of dialog?

From what I have gleaned from the archives, Dr. Bob wishes to only be an observer and not a participator. This site is for research purposes only - we are in a sense an "experiment".

While there is a 'clinical' interest in us, I sense there is not a 'sentimental' one. Does this make some posters uncomfortable? Is this why some try to personalize the relationship between us, the posters, and the good doctor (AKA: Silent Bob)?

It is an interesting thought - when someone is silent or missing, does it evoke emotions of some sort in us? Why do people seek connection? Any thoughts?

Well, I like Dr. Bob and enjoy our brief exchanges.

Is that reason enough?

Why shouldn't people try to engage him. He's a person who provides us with this space and this environment. His guidelines help set the tone of the site. We're grateful.

Plus, he can be really funny. :D

Just what I was thinking. He's a human being, he's ever present on this site, I think being expected to ignore the fact that he's another human among us would be wayyy too creepy for me.

Yeah. I miss people. And worry about them when I don't know whether they are okay.

>Why do people seek connection?

Because we are social animals.

I completely understand the above in terms of "real life" and in regards to some people that you interact "freely and often" with on the internet. But, I guess I am not seeing it in this particular circumstance. Interesting answers! Thanks for the replies.

I am probably misunderstanding... perhaps you have frequent and ongoing communication with Dr. Bob off the board.

I was merely wondering out loud as to how "it appeared" that some people seem to talk frequently to an Administrator that doesn't respond to their comments... perhaps he does in personal emails.

If you are only reading the messages on the board (like I am), then it can be misleading as to what is happening on a personal level through email.

Sorry, if you were offended, I was merely making a personal observation, based on the archives and nothing more. Evidently, there is more to this board than the archives :)

Oh. You were still talking about Dr Bob... I thought you were talking about why we miss the posters on the boards...

> I was merely wondering out loud as to how "it appeared" that some people seem to talk frequently to an Administrator that doesn't respond to their comments... perhaps he does in personal emails.

He has a rather similar communication style via email.
I dunno... You ever prayed to God?
At least Dr Bob responds sometimes lol.

Whenever we talk about Dr. Bob, my therapist reminds me that irregular reinforcement is the most effective sort.

Well, ok, not every time. Sometimes he laughs and says that that sounds like a psychiatrist. :)

> I am curious about something. Why do so many posters try to engage Dr. Bob in some sort of dialog?

I don't know about other people, but I like to talk to myself. LOL

> From what I have gleaned from the archives, Dr. Bob wishes to only be an observer and not a participator. This site is for research purposes only - we are in a sense an "experiment".

I don't think *we* were ever an "experiment", even when there was research going on. We were never in an experiment either. There were never any controls or ways to objectively measure anything.

I think Dr. Bob chooses not to participate mainly for practical reasons. He simply doesn't have enough time to interact with people here AND administrate at the same time. Also, maybe he's just a shy person.

> While there is a 'clinical' interest in us, I sense there is not a 'sentimental' one. Does this make some posters uncomfortable? Is this why some try to personalize the relationship between us, the posters, and the good doctor (AKA: Silent Bob)?

I don't think there is only a 'clinical' interest in us. He's just a regular person, just like any one of us. Does that make people uncomfortable?

I could be totally and absolutely wrong here. You're talking to a person who thinks that Dr. Bob is like a plush animal friend. :-P

LOL! A plush animal friend... I think, by nature, you must be a warm and fuzzy person... very cool.

That brings me to an interesting thought, though. With very limited contact and interaction with a person, isn't it interesting how other people usually come to view said person as either.

1. Benevolent
2. Malevolent
or
3. Apathetic

This, too, must be human nature :)

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Those three pretty much sum up all of human nature.

#3, especially...and unfortunately :-(

I thought that could *possibly* mean that different people will view the same person completely differently, even though their interaction is the same.
One will see benevolence, where another will see malevolence based on their own projection.

I wonder if he reads the posts and laughs.

But I don't think it's a mean laugh.
