If you're still having problems, tell me what browser you're using (including the version) and I'll try to help you.

Hi

Click on Tools >>> Internet Options >>> Security (make sure the Internet icon or 'globe' is highlighted and click custom level.

Scroll Down until you find "Scripting" and make sure the options there are enabled. Click ok then ok again, and you should be set.

OK,

Open IE, click on the Tools bar at the top of the window. Scroll down and click on Internet Options. A window will open. Click on the tab on the right that says Advanced. Scroll down until you see 2 boxes, one says Java Console Enabled, the other says Java Logging Enabled. Make sure that both boxes are checked. After you do that click OK and reboot your machine.

You should be able to login to Yahoo chat now, but if you can't and you get an error message, write it down and post it to me and I'll see what I can do to help you out.

Good luck!
Greg

First, a BIG THANKS to both of you for so kindly posting to help me enable Java with my IE 5.5

I very carefully followed each of your instructions and could not find ANYTHING remotely resembling what you mentioned. NOTHING. Very frustrating because I know what I'm doing when it comes to checking and changing settings!

So, I decided ha-rumf, I will go to the Chat ONE MORE TIME and try to get on, well lo and behold I had to download something called "Microsoft Virtual Machine" !!! Once I did that and then checked back with each of your instructions, I found EVERYTHING each of you mentioned! :-)

I have no clue what this Microsoft Virtual Machine is but apparently it's connected to running Java somehow. And I got into the chat room ... of course it was so late that no one was there, but I made it in! :-)

Thanks again you two!

Is it absolutely necessary to have check marks for "Java Console Enabled" and "Java Logging Enabled"??

The reason I ask is because when I first went to make sure they were checked like you suggested they were BOTH NOT checked and I had been able to get into Chat with them NOT being checked, so I'm just wondering.

(I went ahead and checked them, then rebooted, as you suggested, just to be on the safe side) but I can't help wonder what their importance/function is, if you happen to know? Thanks!

GREG: could you handle 1 more question, pls?

Regarding "Java Console Enabled" and "Java Logging Enabled" and the Chat group -- might having these both checked ("ON" so to speak) make it jumpy when typing, to the point where it misses letters that I'm typing and I have to go back and make sure my words are complete?

Not Greg, but I have neither one checked chat! (nm)

What do "Java console" and "Java Logging" each do?

Why should they both be ENABLED for using the chat room?

Thanks for any info you may have!

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I wish I had an answer for your question, but my nephew is the computer geek in the family. When I was having recent Java probs relating to chat, this is what he suggested I do and it fixed me right up. I haven't had any trouble since. I'd be glad to call him to get some clarification if you'd like. I know my way around a comp pretty well but I have to turn to him when things go off into the "great unknown" for me....

Sorry this didn't work for you, I tried.

Hi Greg :-)

If you don't mind asking him, I'd like to know. You did spark my interest in knowing what it does, etc.

Kiddo,

I wont be in contact with him until Saturday (my boy's 12th b-day party), but I will ask him then and get back to you. I'm curious myself... :)

Kiddo/Greg: what I did ...

In reply to Re: Java Console Logging Enabled » kiddo, posted by Greg on April 11, 2002, at 15:23:17

Kiddo/Greg,

I became confused about the java console enabled and java logging enabled because Greg had said to have them both enabled, but Kiddo indicated that (s)he does NOT have them enabled but gets into chat room just fine.

So, first I went into chat with them both ENABLED and it went fine, then I logged out and unchecked the marks next to "enable" (presumably DISABLING them both), rebooted and tried chat. Again, I got in and did just fine.

My conclusion based on my *experiment* -- whatever java console and java logging do, they apparently do NOT affect ability to get into chat and do chat.

I am also curious to hear what Greg finds out from his cousin as to just what Java console and Java Logging *do* do! Thanks.

Nope, Greg - it's not MicroSoft that set up the Java platform but Sun Microsystems.
MicroSoft's versions are Active-X & .Net (note the dot before Net - said as dot net).

First, I was wrong about which box to check. It was the third box, JIT Compiler for Virtual Machine Enabled which must be checked for chat to work. This should be checked by default, mine for some reason, wasn't.

Java Console (and I'm not quoting verbatim because he gets VERY technical). When you write a Java script in IE, if you enable the console it gives you a window that tracks what your Java script does as you write it, kind of like a real-time viewer. You can make on the fly corrections to your script if you see something you don't like.

Java Logging. This is just a simple log program that tracks what changes you make to your script during any given session in the form of a text file.

Now remember I got this info from my computer geek nephew, so if it's not 100% correct I take no responsibility for it's reliability... :)
