First, I was wrong about which box to check. It was the third box, JIT Compiler for Virtual Machine Enabled which must be checked for chat to work. This should be checked by default, mine for some reason, wasn't.
Java Console (and I'm not quoting verbatim because he gets VERY technical). When you write a Java script in IE, if you enable the console it gives you a window that tracks what your Java script does as you write it, kind of like a real-time viewer. You can make on the fly corrections to your script if you see something you don't like.
Java Logging. This is just a simple log program that tracks what changes you make to your script during any given session in the form of a text file.
Now remember I got this info from my computer geek nephew, so if it's not 100% correct I take no responsibility for it's reliability... :)
