I was going through the archives and am getting confused by them because unless my eyes are deceiving me, for example, there are posts in the archive labeled "02 March 27" which also appear in the current list of posts.
Could you please explain the archiving procedure, how the dates are determined, what cut offs are, etc. and why there seems to be overlap?
Thanks.

The archives don't overlap with each other, but the current list does sometimes include posts from the previous archive. Without any overlap, it went from a full list to an empty one and there was less continuity and also posts posted right before the changeover were more likely to be missed.

Thanks for the info, Dr. Bob.
Okay, I understand that the current the current list does sometimes include posts from the previous archive because when I click on current posts in a certain way (I couldn't even say how, it just sorta happens!) I notice a long list of previous threads, some of which are from an archive.
My new question is this - is a thread ever *broken up*, i.e. separated so that part of it winds up in one archive and the other part in another archive?

The archives are by date, so whenever a new one is created, posts start going there, so threads from before do get broken up.
But the "thread" listing in a post includes other posts in that thread no matter what archive they're from. Like the current listing can include posts from different archives.
I hope that makes sense,
Bob

Dr. Bob - thanks for continuing to answer my questions about the archives. I have a *natural* curiousity about computers and how things are put together on websites, that's all!
First, I think you may have inadvertently answered a question I was going to ask, and that is are the posts archived continuously?
I ask this because each day when I read through the CURRENT listing of posts, I notice that that the oldest ones from the day before (the ones that were on the beginning of the list) are gone and newer ones are now on top.
So, I am concluding that each night at some point, the *oldest* posts in a current list are automatically archived?
You mentioned that "the archives are by date, so whenever a new one is created, posts start going there" -- my follow-up question this time: is there a set *cut off* point for the archives, i.e. are they limited to a certain length that was *pre-created* so an archive automatically stops at a certain point and then a new one starts, or do you start and stop the archives manually? (I hope I'm making this question clear!)
Thanks,
Janelle

Dr. Bob - I had another question about the ARCHIVES, but with all the activity over here on Admin board, I think it just got missed by you, so I'm copying/pasting it here:

Is there a limit to the number of lines a board page can have, i.e., before it starts to be archived?
And is archiving done automatically, or do YOU have to manually put in the date for the archive, e.g. the most recent archive is 02 March 27 - did you set this archive up or does the server somehow automatically do it?

Sorry, I answered this yesterday, but must not have confirmed it...
Posts are actually archived as soon as they're posted. Saved in the archive for that date. If by "archive" you can refer to something current...

Yes, see:

I don't see a specific FAQ regarding "ARCHIVES".
I saw something under the "Options" question that said that when the current board reaches 125KB, an archive is created. Is this what you were trying to link me to?
And one more question - does the server set the DATE for each Archive or do you manually have to do that?

You said if you ever have a corporation would I run it -- I'd be delighted -- actually, I can't run my own life, never mind a corporation! LOL!
What did you mean by that question?!!

Right, wasn't that what you were asking?

Yes, I sure was asking about a cut-off size for a current board.
But the not quite part is that I still have this unanswered question - is ALL of the archiving process automatic, meaning the server dates each archive (or do you manually have to put dates on archives)?
Thanks, and thus concludes my archive questions! Gee, we could have an archive of my archive questions! LOL! :-)

The server dates them. The less I have to do manually, the better!
