the hardest part

Man it just seems the hardest part with all the meds is the fact they take so long to work.
It really is a shame that they dont just figure out a way to make whatever any of us are taking a fast working drug.
It would make it so much easier to quickly say, "no that's not helping" or "wow that's working". Sometimes I wonder if thats the way the
it is so the psych world can make their money. Quick cure, no money, long cure, lots of money.
I just feel so bad reading all the posts of people on meds that are unhappy. I've been there and really feel for you.

The only instant relief ones for me were when first went on benzos. They work right away. Since they say SSRI's do the same a lot of docs don't prescribe the benzos. Old but they have a history of no bad things happening like lets say an atypical antipsychotic with diabetes, weight gain, even sometime TD. I tend to agree with you. For what it's worth only benzos have ever helped me if an SSRI added in small doses upped the benzo by the doc. Phillipa

No one really knows how the various antidepressants work, at least as far as how they manage to improve depression, but a lot of what I've read in the past few years says that they lead to down-regulation of some receptor types, which alters the ratios between neurotransmitters. The SSRIs also seem to encourage the creation of new neurons in some parts of the brain. All that takes a while.

So, it's not so much that the drugs would have to be changed, as our brains would have to change more quickly.

But you're right, having to wait so long to find out if something's going to work really [emulates a Hoover]. No question about it.

Funny -- the other day, my therapist was asking me about how long this med trial would last, when we'd know whether this would work for me? Answer? Oh, about three months...

With a 30% chance of remission from an ad I've come to the conclusion for me show me the proof and then I will switch meds if it's positive. So far ll years and nothing but the benzos do work if not perfectly better than the synthroid right now. Thank goodness for a new endo next month and the obgyn finding out about me needing the cystocele, rectocele, prolapsed uterus surgery as my pdoc said it may help better than any med could. good luck with that I hope it helps.
yeah Ive often thought about how no therapist I ever went to suggested underlying helth problems.
Like perhaps Im defficient in something natural my body needs, a certain vitamin maybe, or maybe a certain hormone or perhaps my brain is lacking dopamine. You would think its 2007, they would be able to test us for something that is chemically messed up in our brains or bodies before putting on us lifelong antidepressants???

thanks for the reply. That made me laugh about the 3 month med trial. Like how do they know 3 months and not a month. Well hopefully it would be a trail for free.
