Klonopin and Seratonin...

Posted by spriggy on October 22, 2005, at 17:16:53

I think I'm going to start up the Klonopin consistently again- I will probably keep it below .5 mg's. ( I usually cut a .5 in half).

Anyway, someone once ( I think Maxime) said that Klonopin affects seratonin. Is this definite?

I don't need anything to mess with my seratonin. It wigs me out.

In terms of direct action, I don't think there is really any or if any, very minimal. If anything, it would reduce (to a very small degree) most neurochemicals as the action of Klonopin is a CNS depressant - that why it's a calmer downer.

I have found the action of Klonopin for me - after about two weeks of startup - was just a GOOD antianxiety med - that action itself was enough for quite a while to make a postive impact on my mood.

Mileage varies. Some folks love it, others hate it but that's true of all the meds we discuss here.

i believe it releases serotonin into the bloodstream. It doesnt reuptake it or anything, just the opposite i think, as in lowers it by releasing it.

Try not to get too wigged out about it.

Klonopin (clonazepam) does mildly to moderately depress some people, but it clears up as soon as the medication is stopped. You won't know until you try it. Since you haven't yet complained about it increasing your depression, I don't think you are being affected this way.

The investigative history of clonazepam includes contradictory findings regarding its affects on serotonin. I have always attributed its depressogenic effects to whatever serotonergic properties it possesses. However, there has been nothing I have read that would indicate any irreversible changes in serotonin funtion.

I have found other benzodiazepines to produce a temporary depression that lasts for a day or two. If you feel more depressed immediately, try not to come to any definite conclusions. Give it perhaps a week to see how a higher dosage of clonazepam will treat you.

Have you tried Neurontin as an anxiolytic?

I am still unclear as to what you are being treated for.

It seems that Neurontin no longer enjoys the reputation it once had as a mood-stabilizer or augmentor of antidepressants. However, it really does have anti-anxiety properties that are worth exploring, especially for social anxiety and social phobia.

These drugs affect people differently and I think that trial and error is the only way to see how it works. I think that if you start to feel down from Klonopin, you would need to add an antidepressant or a stimulant.

In addition, scientists really don't know to what extent, if any, that antidepressants or other psychoactive drugs work by affecting serotonin. That's why trial and error is important.
