A new question--seroquel

Posted by Bellaciao on July 3, 2003, at 16:39:56

I did talk to my dr about ambien and he is increasing my seroquel from 300 to 400mg at night for one week and if needed go to 100mg in am and 400mg at night--I forgot to ask him, could I take the whole 500mg at night since it so sedating? Any answers would be very much appreciated. Thanks

id honestly say that increasing an anti-psychotic (or any psychological medication) for its zombie style sedating effects is insanity. my last p-doc (very cooky, who i got rid of and found a cool p-doc) prescribed me risperdal for my insomnia and slight paramoia (my least important issues)i felt like shit and still couldnt sleep so i stoped it after 2 weeks. for me anti-psychotics are almost unbareable. They drain my creative energy (im a musician) right out of me and make me a zombie. not to metion i was on adderal for my add, which she knew, and the combination of an maoi and amphetimine is extremely dangerous. i will never try another anti-psychotic, i am who i am and as long as im not deppressed im happy about myself, my individuality and my uniqueness (even if my uniqueness is because of a slightly psychotic mental issue). as for sleep issues unless you need more meds for mental reasons i would try the herb valerian or the suppliment melatonin they both work for me. in the case of using ambian regularaly it will make you medicly dependant but remember all of us are medicly dependant. ambien will not really muck with your brain chemistry at all compared to raising your dose of anti-psychotics.

I wouldn't think that you need the am dosage unless you're experiencing anxiety during the day.
In that case you might want to go with the 25 mg tabs if your doctor agrees. As Jay infers, Seroquel IS serious medication and you really do need to let your physician advise you on dosage.

Because of Seroquel's sedating effects, the dosage is raised by degrees - as your doctor is doing. My own experience is that each time the dosage was raised, you feel very tired for a period of time. As your body adjusts to the medication, the side effects gradually fade. I've adjusted quite well to the 400 mg dosage I take every night and no longer feel sedated, but it does take some time.

Take good vitamins (I like Nature Made Maximin Pack right there at Walgreens) and drink a lot of water, which helps to flush toxins from your system and keeps everything lubricated.

Keep in mind that people react to medication according to their specific emotional disorders and individual chemistry. For instance, I have bipolar disorder but had a poor reaction to the mood stabalizer Depakote, an effective treatment for many people with bipolar symptoms. Despite my poor response to Depakote, I would not presume to warn others away from this medication if a physician has prescribed it.

Hi Gracie, it seems like I always find something good in these posts I need to ask about lol. May I ask what is in the Nature Made Maximin Pack of vitamins you buy? I'm looking for a good multi besides Centrum which I just bought. You mentioned the Nature Made was good-I was just wondering. Also, I try to drink a lot of water too-how much do you drink? I buy those Propel fitness waters with Vit B's ,C, E and Potassium added-they're great. You see, I'm smart-but I like to see what others are doing and what works for them. You sound like you got it together girl!!! lol
Thank you,
gal

The Maximin Pack comes in little packages which is much nicer than screwing around with a lot of vitamin bottles. The price isn't too bad either -
a month's supply (30 packets) for I think about $14.00, not bad compared to the price of medication!

Okay I am looking on the box...each packet contains...damn need my glasses...okay, each packet contains -

1 balanced B-100 timed release vitamin
1 Vitamin C 1000 mg
1 Vitamin E 1000 IU
1 calcium 500 mg
1 pill with Vitamin A 12,500 IU & Vitamin D 800 IU
1 multivitamin/multimineral formula

So 6 pills, not too bad if you're a whack job like me who is used to taking a lot of pills. Let me know if you want me to list the specifics of the B-vitamin pill and the multivitamin-mineral pill. I don't mind, if I'm not typing I should be cleaning up around here but I don't really feel like it. And it's WAY too hot to go back outside.

Do those Propel Fitness waters have calories?

Thanks so very much Gracie, I thought they came in little packages. That's what I liked about it-much easier! They sound excellent and well balanced I may look for them around here and try them.
A whack job???? No you're not!!!! LOL Man I'm the whack job-sheesh I've been on every med I think and I still can't get off my butt to do the things I need to be doing-long story lol I do believe this Topamax does make you lethargic-but I have a problem being a bit lazy lately-like over the last 10 years anyway-nah I'm ok-just *should* be doing more with my life.
Anywaaaaaayyyyyyy lol,
It's hot here too-considering it was June gloom here all month. Just a week ago. Do you work? I hear ya-it is too hot to go outside, although we are getting a little breeze-cool.

Let me get my glasses .......
ok the Propel Fitness water has 10 calories per 8fl oz serving and there's 3 servings (23.7FL.OZ) in their large bottles, I'm drinking a peach one right now yummmmmmmmmmmmy
they really are good and I'll tell ya it gets the toxins out of my body and lubricates everything just as well as water does, I pee every hour, and it helps inhibit the side effect of kidney stones from the Topamax. All their flavors in their waters are natural too-all of them. Good stuff. Do they sell Propel where you are-they are pretty popular.
So, how is the zinc, folic acid, magnesium, and selenium in the multi-pack?
Thanks so much.

Gal-
Not working too much right now, I'm sort of easing back into it - I'm trying really hard not to put too much on my plate because it always sets me back. If my personal life was better I could handle more work for sure, but my husband is real busy divorcing me after 20 years so he can be with his girlfriend so now I have to deal with all THAT crap, man it just never ends. But my therapist tells me I'm handling it better than most (normal) people do, imagine that.

Anyway, I better say something about medication so we don't get moved to another board, that just confuses me. I had a very hard time working through the medication trials - Depakote, Prozac, Wellbutrin - and while I was still adjusting to the Seroquel, wading through the brain fog and being SO tired, just making it to work was an enormous effort. I remember sitting in my car every morning looking at the door into the building, wondering how in the hell I was going to drag myself through another day.

Okay, that's behind me...right now I have a weekend job & do PRN work for a couple of orthopedic doctors. I'm sort of gauging myself at this work to see how I hold up - the doc I work for on Saturdays, he knows about me and doesn't get upset if I screw up once in awhile - in fact he can tell I'm improving & I know he's glad for me, he's a really nice guy.

Alright back to the vitamins. Here's everything you get in your daily 6 pills...wait, need to clean glasses...okay now I can see teeny writing.

Vitamin A 12,500 IU, 64% Beta Carotene
Vitamin C with Rose Hips = 1,120 mg
Vitamin D 800 IU
Vitamin E 1,030 IU
Thiamin 103 mg
Riboflavin 102 mg
Niacin 120 mg
Vitamin B6 105 mg
Folic Acid 800 mcg
Vitamin B12 106 mcg
Biotin 145 mcg
Pantothenic Acid 110 mg
Calcium 850 mg
Iron 8 mg
Phosphorus 150 mg
Iodine 150 mcg
Magnesium 125 mg
Zinc 15 mg
Selenium 100 mcg
Copper 3 mg
Manganese 3 mg
Chromium 100 mcg
Molybdenum 50 mcg
Potassium 10 mg

Hmmmm, kind of a weak finish for such a great start...I didn't notice how lame the potassium was until right now, so I'm glad you asked! I need the stuff too, I've got high blood pressure.

Anyway, the Propel sounds good, only 10 calories and you like the taste? I can't abide most things with artificial sweetener, although they're getting better with taste all the time. Remember
Tab soda?? Gag me with a spoon. I don't care much for soda anyway, I'm a coffee hound...just another reason why I need all that water. I'll keep an eye out for the Propel & I better get some potassium too! No problem, love bananas.

Thanks so much Gracie, you sound great despite what you're going through with the divorce and all. You will be just fine. You sound strong. I hear you about the topic switch soooooooo
The vitamins sound good but your right---
10mg of Potasssium-howd they leave that out? I almost get more in the Propel lol
Tab soda!!!!!! yuk! My brother remembers that stuff too. Man the saccharin would kill a flea. I don't drink coffee never liked the stuff-but I do pop into Starbucks once in a while for a Frappachino.
I spent 3 weeks in the hospital for medication trials and I hear ya there. I felt like a guinea pig-I guess I was-I tried Abilify, and Trileptal, nope, Resperdal-nope, Wellbutrin-nope.
I know, how do we drag ourselves through the day when we just seem to think we can't--but we do-and that what makes it great I guess. It's hard and it does suck sometimes.
It sounds like you do work for a really nice guy and that's great! You are very lucky.
I have a lot of schoolwork to catch up on I graduate next year finally!!! Now I am tying up loose ends but they are long loose ends.
1 more thing about the propel, the sweetness comes from sucrose syrup and the rest is all natural. In the past I drank nothing like this but yes even 10 calories suits my taste-it gets my water for the day in. Ever since the Topamax I quit sodas-it's weird-I drank tons of them and now zippo-after I tasted them and they started tasting like metallic chemicals I gave em up.
Don't need the caffeine anyway.
I'm taking a Calcium, Magnesium, and Zinc combo by Schiff now it seems to be good. I'll check this other one out.

Thanks so much again
Have a great week!
