St. John's Wort and Valerian don't seem to help me with my extreme irritability. I was wondering if someone had any other ideas.

Passiflora, skull-cap, kava, noni & hops are all recommended herbs. Be aware that you need to check with a pharmacist for possible drug interactions with other meds & some herbs can have potentially harmful long-term effects.
You also need to know that herbs aren't regulated by any governmental agency & what you buy doesn't necessarily contain the amounts specified on the label or even any active ingredients whatsoever. It can be difficult to find a truly reliable brand & you need to do your homework thoroughly before you buy.
Even buying a reputable brand with active ingredients, the effects of herbs *tend* to be milder than meds & may not work as well as you hoped for. I used to manage a health food store & know there's as much hype with health foods & supplements as there is in any other business.

You could also try glutamine..which converts to GABA within your brain...
There is a GABA supplement, but it doesn't readily cross the blood brain barrier, most of it remains in the blood.

Hello,
First off, irritability can come from a number of sources. Depression, anxiety, ADHD, PMS, imbalance of hormones, etc... I would reccommend this to you, if you want to go the herbal and vitamin route. That is a good idea actually, because I have found that a few vitamins help my problems almost as much as prescript. medication! Try this. First, go out and get yourself a multivitamin/multimineral supplement from a healthfood store like GNC. Do not get a Wal-Mart brand or anything from a department store. Quality is not nearly as effecient. For about a week, you will feel more annoyed, just until your system adjusts. But, I would also advise you to try GABA. Look for the amino acid powder, or capsules. This has a sedating effect, but only in higher amounts than reccommended. Don't take more than it tells you on the bottle or jar. You could also pick up some L-Tyrosine too, which is great for CNS depression and anxiety. Also good for attention problems. But, add these in a series. First, the multivitamin and the GABA. Then, about 2 weeks later, go and get the L-Tyrosine. This should bring you good results. Good luck. Hope you take my advice.
Frankie.

Hello. I'm not sure if this will help you...but it sure does help me. And these herbs are pretty much on the non-expensive side.
#1 for me is Ginseng Root (any kind will pretty much do). I take the liquid form and just drink it down-it's in tiny little vials with a little straw.
#2 is peppermint leaves
#3 is cinnamon
#4 is Chamomile
And don't forget the B vitamins B6 & B12.If you enjoy tea...there is an herbal tea with these ingrediants in it, and a few more made by Celestial Seasonings...It is called "Tension Tamer"....I like it, to me it is calming and soothing. Good Luck. P.L.
This is the end of the thread.
