Is Serzone and Xanax really dangerous?

Posted by Gracie2 on November 28, 2001, at 13:29:20

My husband is thinking of leaving me and my whole dysfunctional family is coming to my house for Christmas. I'm getting more and more upset and Xanax isn't helping a great deal. Is it really dangerous to take Serzone with Xanax? I want to calm down, but I don't want to put myself in a coma or anything.
I'd appreciate any advice.

Gracie - Sorry to hear about your predicament. No, Xanax™ (alprazolam) can be taken with Serzone™ (nefazodone), but don't overdo it or you will be a zombie around your family. The Xanax will just put off dealing with your real problems, and won't "fix" anything in the long run. Have a talk with your doctor &/or therapist about this.

Yours is another very common case of what I call "Tis-the-season-to-be-jolly-itis". Man, sometimes holidays are just more hassle than they're worth. Take care, Gracie, many of us can relate.

Keep us posted, and hang in there. If anything, try to keep your chin up for the children (if you have any). Try to let them enjoy Christmas while they are young and still have the delusions of a "happy holiday season". I hope that the last comment does not put too much pressure on you, though. It's just that kids grow up too fast, and begin to realize that Christmas isn't always a really joyous time; I believe in letting them have their fantasy while they still can.

Sincerely - Cam

Hi Gracie,
sorry to hear you are going through so much right now -- at a difficult time of year to boot.

I take Serzone and Klonapin, and the Serzone does more to help my anxiety and agitation than the Klonapin alone ever did. I need to take a low dose of both though, so I don't turn into a zombie (as Cam indicated can happen with too much).

Hang in there and keep us posted on how you are doing,
cindy

Gracie - I should have mentioned that Serzone does inhibit the metabolism of Xanax, so you require less Xanax for the same effect. Everyone has different natural levels of the enzyme (CYP-3A3/4) that metabolizes both drugs and, due to these individualized levels, the ability of Serzone to slow the activity of this enzyme will differ from person to person. Therefore, it is difficult to say how much more of a Xanax effect you will get. So, as Cindylou and I have said, just take it easy with the dosing. - Cam
