Okay, here's my ongoing saga - doc has added LAMICTAL as mood stablizer, starting slowly - a week on 4 mg, then 5 days on 6 mg ... I'd really appreciate it if anyone who has taken or IS taking Lamictal could tell me how they did or are doing on it.
I asked about the rash side effect and my doc said getting a rash happened to people mostly back when Lamictal was available in 10 mg as smallest dose, so people were getting too much at once (too strong a dose) and this was a factor in the rash. She said now that there's lower doses to start on and gradually increase, the incidence of rash has gone down. Hmmmm ...

Man, those doses are too low...the PDR dosages are correct (how can you expect to get better in a reasonable amount of time with those doses?):
initially 50 mg per day for 2 weeks, then 100 mg daily in 2 divided doses for 2 weeks; may increase by 100mg/day at 1-2 week intervals; usual maintenance 100-500mg/day in 2 divided doses

I'm reeeeeal confused now ... you said those doses are too low, which I'm sure you're right (I'll have to check PDR, etc.!), but if they're too low, then how come Lamictal even comes in samples of 2 mg? I kid you not, she gave me bottles of 2 mg, and I start with 2 pills (4mg) each morning for awhile. That's a far cry from what you said - initially 50 mg per day for 2 weeks, then 100 mg daily in 2 divided doses for 2 weeks; may increase by 100mg/day at 1-2 week intervals; usual maintenance 100-500mg/day in 2 divided doses!!!!! EEEEEK! Thanks for the info.

Janelle,
Your doses do seem very low but Sal's recommendations are too high for some people including me. I didn't know they made any dosage less than 25mg. Is that only available in the sample starter packs? Are you outside the US?I'm just guessing here but I suspect that when doctors prescribe Lamictal for epilepsy or bipolar they may feel that they need to rush the dosage up faster than for depression.
Also keep in mind that you may be able to increase your dose by larger amounts each time.
Jane
