Just started wellbutrin and can't sleep at night

Posted by lissy on January 15, 2001, at 15:34:14

I have a friend who just started taking wellbutrin and is suppose to take on dose in the morning and one at nite. She can't sleep at nite w/taking the nightime dose. She can only sleep w/just taking the morning dose. So she is only taking the one dose for now. I thought maybe she would be able to tolerate the second dose once the medication gets in her in system for a few weeks. I know I have encountered sleep problems at the beginning of trying a new medication. Does anyone have any suggestions? She also wants to make sure there is no weight gain w/this medication I told her what I have read it did'nt look like it.

Do you know how late she takes it? My pdoc has always told me that if I can't get to my afternoon dose by 4pm at the latest, I should skip it so it doesn't affect my sleep. I've never had any weight gain with WB. Now my other meds, that's a different story.

lissy,

You didn't mention what the dose was she is/was taking, but it might be worth talking to her doctor about halving it. I started at 75mgs (37.5 am, 37.5 pm) and eventually worked my way up to 300mgs. I've heard of people taking as high as 400. The saving grace is that for a lot of people the "activating effect" usually wears off to some degree after the start up period and hopefully she'll be left with a med that will help the depression.

Taking 7.5mg to 15 mg Remeron, an hour before bedtime, works for me. That's a low dose, so most pdocs shouldn't have a problem with it.

I had the same problem. I was given Ambien for sleep. That would only give me about 4 hours of sleep and I'd be up again. Now I've been given Klonipin at night, and that works well. The problem is you can only get one month at a time in NY. My idiot pdoc said to call my mail order prescription company in PA and see if PA law allows them to do the 3 month mail order supply. They do, but then the jerk wouldn't give it to me after all. Actually, he lied and said he called after me and they said they wouldn't. I called again and they said again they would. He would only give me the one month. I don't see him anymore because he was dropping my insurance anyway. But, klonipin at night (.5 or .10) added to my Wellbutrin SR (150 2x day) allows me to feel good, and sleep, a priceless combination. The one month at a time thing is a drag though. The new pdoc I saw did give me a 3-month mail away prescription for the Klonipin, but I hate the new place - tons of people in the waiting room, no real appointments, basically a mill.
But the klonipin is worth a try. Good luck.
