I was so anxious for so long that I was not eating much, I got on the scale the other morning and saw I had gain 6 lbs in a month. I have been eating well and lost a pound. I am just freaking out, I do not want to get fat~ Does anyone know anyway to lost weight on SSRIs. I seem not to have gain on 10mg but have since going up on my dosage, I am going to cut down on my doseage when I get home but do not want to go home looking like a lard!!!!!!

Hi Lexy,
I am on two antidepressents so the weight issue is a concern for me. I am going to weight watchers which is much healther & easier to do than the Adkins. I have been able to keep my weight under control. I've lost 5 pounds in a little over a month. For some the Adkins works but I couldn't do it. Good luck.

Journal of Clin. Psychopharmacology, August 2001
Drug Interactions With Grapefruit Juice: An Update.
Greenblatt, David J. MD.

"Drug interactions with grapefruit juice will occur after a single exposure to a usual dose (such as a single 8-ounce glass). There may be variations in the extent of drug interactions depending on the source and method of preparation of grapefruit juice. Duration of exposure to grapefruit juice also is of importance. There is evidence that CYP3A inhibition may increase with repeated doses of grapefruit juice, 29 although the effect of exposure for longer than 7 to 10 days is largely unknown.

Public Health Implications

As with many issues involving the relation of prescription medications to food products or to herbal medicines, media coverage and reporting has often been excessive and unbalanced. It now is possible to evaluate the problem of grapefruit juice interactions with prescription drugs in the context of a realistic assessment of risk. Although some drugs are affected by an interaction with grapefruit juice, most are not. Individuals taking unaffected drugs may continue to take grapefruit juice with no hazard or problem. In most cases, the medications that are affected have been identified or can be predicted based on their established pathways of metabolism and pharmacokinetic properties. For patients taking medications known to interact with grapefruit juice, there generally are noninteracting alternative medications within each drug class that should allow appropriate treatment to proceed safely with no need to avoid grapefruit juice or any other as-yet-unidentified food or natural product that may interact with CYP3A through similar mechanisms. Nonetheless, it must be recognized that it will never be possible to perform a clinical study to confirm or rule out the possibility of an interaction of grapefruit juice with each and every drug that we would like to know about. Basic and clinical research on the subject will continue, and will address such questions as whether grapefruit juice influences the function of transport proteins (such as P-glycoprotein) that may contribute to determining oral bioavailability of some drugs. Ultimately, the management of actual or potential drug interactions with grapefruit juice (or with any other agent) in clinical practice requires a balance of therapeutic judgment together with a knowledge of the science."

I was a little cranky during the first week. I think it had something to do with sugar withdrawal. It passed during the second week and I have really done well on it. It's something I think that I can stick with and that's important! Mrs. C

Lexy, I just posted a reply but I don't think it got there so I am re-posting. Sorry if I am repeating myself. During the first two weeks on Atkins there is no breads, rice, potatoes, pasta, fruits, yogurt, milk or sugar allowed. You are allowed to eat nuts, cheese, meat, fish, eggs and veggies. Atkins also has some great low carb foods out there and there are some wonderful sugar free candies that got me through the sugar cravings. It was difficult for the first week but my body adjusted during the second week. I lost six pounds during the first two weeks. After the two week period is over you can begin to add back in carbs until you stop losing weight. At that point you know you've reached your carb limit. Everyone is different so the amount of carbs you can eat before starting to gain weight again will depend on you. I cheat a little bit every week and still lose about 1-2 pounds per week. It's been pretty easy for me and something I think I can stay with. I lost a lot of weight with weight watchers after my kids were born but could never stick with it for very long. Good luck to you in losing your six pounds. I still have ten to lose. You can do it! Mrs. C

Hi Everyone:
I've been pretty busy at work so haven't been posting much, but I read all the posts! I looked up grapefruit juice on yahoo and found several articles regarding the mix with meds. I didn't see anything that talked about SSRIs, but it all sounded like it's in the early stages of research. My father-in-law's doctor tells him to drink it daily and he's on a large number of meds for all sorts of things. So, I guess we need to do more reading.

Hope everyone is doing well. I had sort of a meltdown yesterday (12 days before my period, my usual crazy time!). Went to see my T and she gave me some coping/behavioral things to do for next month - like get on my treadmill, go for a drive, eat chocolate, etc. Not very scientific, huh? She thinks my dosage is fine, but I'm just starting to experience the effects of perimenopause. Yippee :-(. I have terrible night sweats once or twice a week. I'm still foggy during the day and she said this could possibly be the signs of perimenopause too.

So, I am fine, just experiencing normal ups and downs I guess. I learned that the mother of one of my son's friends died Sunday of a blood clot in her leg that went to her heart. 38 years old and in great shape - a P.E. teacher. It happened in a matter of 30 minutes or less. Not to bring anyone down, but it surely made me realize how fragile life is. And still with all that, I still couldn't turn around my little meltdown yesterday. I guess it really is chemical or do I just not have any self-control anymore?

I hope everyone is doing well and feeling fine. The weather here is in the low 70s and everything is green!
~ Lynne

Hi Lexy,

I really don't think you should be too concerned with a slight weight gain. If you've already lost 1.5 lbs, it means you won't have any trouble loosing the rest of it.

Granted, it's really lousy to gain weight :( but I think you're going to be a comfortable size 4 again in no time.
