Yes, you are definitely becoming too obsessed by it. (But that's part of your charm, as far as I'm concerned.)
No, mm doesn't matter. The HB is the measurement of hardness of the "lead" in the pencil. "H" designates a hard pencil, so "2H" would be next hardest, up to wherever it tops out, about 7H, I think. The lead gets progressively harder, making it possible to hold a sharper and sharper point. "B" is softer, and it gives a darker line. I haven't actually heard of anything softer than about 4B, which is very, very soft. Much softer than that, and it would just mush onto the paper as soon as you tried to use it.
