I haven't played it. I've watched a bit of other people playing it, but I haven't played it and I don't really know the story.
Apparently it is something about an alternative future. If the Nazi's had have won the war.
Or something like that.
And it is set in that alternative future in England.
I think that there are different parts to the game with different stories.. The first story is about a guy who works for the government. His job is to redact anything that might make people remember bad or traumatic or painful things. Get rid of them from the media record.
There is a pill called 'joy'. I guess it is.. I don't know. Nardil. Say. But it has a tendancy to 'poop out' or people stop taking it (because it stops working for them). And then things are very different...
Like what happened to me when I quit smoking in Canberra. It was like I'd gone off my joy... That's how Canberra and the Philsoophy programme more in particular started seeming to me to be...
Apparently it's soooooooooo competitive. That's what it was. Something about the way the funding works. Where the academics are rewarded for eating their young. Maybe something about enrolments. They get paid for enrolments. So they try and keep their studnets enrolled for as long as possible. If that means they have to stabotate them completion and get them re-enrolling and re-enrolling and re-enrolling... So the academics get paid for having slaves around...
And the academics don't have any qualms about stabotating their studnets, of course. That makes them winners in this great game of who wants to be the biggest psychopath.
The ANU hasn't gotten back to me about how many supervision meetings I had at the ANU. ANy records of my 6 monthly review. Why it didn't happen (why it wasn't acnoweldged as having happened until the 1 year mark)... Why my mid-term review wasn't acknowledged as having happened until... Until... Was it ever acknowledged as having happened?
One of the studnets there did 2 PhDs. Of course he needed to eat. Apparently teh second lot of funding didn't come from the Government (an australian post-graduate award or similar) rather it actually came from his supervisors own pocket! I don't think he had to live in his basement... Only housesit while he went away on holiday... Feed his cat... I don't know how much the second PhD scholarship paid. If he got to go to conferences and the like...
The Univesrity allowed it.
Because, I guess, otherwise, the supervisor simply killed the student. Right?
So that student goes on... ANd I don't know, apparently he's next in line for the major research funding grants (pay ya later). Sure... Mmm hmm. ANd then his studnets are supposed to... What? Write him 3 PhD's before he'll sign them off?
Guess I forgot to take my joy...

I guess different people mean different things by it.
One way of understanding it is that a bunch of Jewish people who exist now (because of who won the war) wouldn't exist. Because their ancestors would have been exterminated.
But another way of understanding it is that the adherance to the dictates of the Nazi party...
How is that any different to what is happening in large segments fo the world today?
In New Zealand, say, I don't know that we have a large Jewish community. So if we leave the issue of the existence of Jewish people out of it... And focus on the day to day life of New Zealanders...
The mandates... The penalties for non-adherance to mandates...
These sorts of things seem to me to be going on in the world, today.

I don't think the New Zealand government has commissioned the design of gas chambers so that people can be herded into the gas chambers and executed on masse.

But I thikn that the reason governments don't do that, anymore, is because such things were (eventually eventually) put a stop to...
I think governments everywehre chose to get more... Subtle. Low-key. Not so obvious. Not so blatant.
I think that is more the truth of the situation.
NZ doesn't do autopsies. The media report whether a death is a murder or suspicious or natural causes etc etc before the police have even decied whether or not to launch an inquiry or investigation (I believe). The media seem to report before the police decide what to do, even.
I geuss it's a government con-munication.
Lots of things don't get prosecuted or investigated, here. People complain about things and then they get a black mark by their name for exclusion because they complained.
We don't hear follow up on anything. The Medical Surgeon guy who maybe murdered his wife. The Medical Surgical guy who was maybe involved in the mjurder of his toddlers and set up of his wife so she'd spend the rest of her days in Hillmortin psych facility in Christchurch (notoriously the worst in NZ).
These things..
Just stories fed to the NZ people about why they would want to be surgeons in New Zealand.
So motivating and inspiring.
To learn out health system is an utter joke.
