I don't know how different the health system will be with the new system.
They are saying they are scrapping the DHBs -- but I don't know how different the 4 new things they are creating will be from the old 20 things they are scrapping.
Dunedin is saying they are afraid they will lose control and Christchurch will take over. But given that Dunedin has been mismanaging things for the people of Dunedin since forever (they still don't have a functional neurosurgery department because they will only hire 1 person who nobody else will / can work with and they will never hire 3 people for a properly functioning unit)...
The concern I have is that actually with 4 centres that will be Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. So Dunedin is actually expanding across central Otago and into Southland. Let's face it, they've actually been responsible for the lack of development there, also. They send the Dunedin based medical students into that region. Let's not kid ourselves that the real regions are determined by where the medical students are sent (because we won't really pay actual workers it's all where the students are sent).
So... Otago Med School sends kids Dunedin (central otago and southland). That's one of the new centres. Or one of the old centers. Otago Med school sends kids up to Christchurch. Let's not kid ourselves how much Christchurch is running things in Dunedin.... Dunedin is running things in Christchurch. Dunedin has a campus in Christchurch. That's the second of 4 centres. The third of 4 centres is Wellington. That's the third branch of the Otago Medcial SChool. With their 3 campuses: Dunedin, check. Christchurch, check. Wellington. Check.
Dunedin Medical School has been encoroaching up the NOrth Island... Up to Taupo, I heard when I was in Dunedin few years back. They were sending students as far up as Taupo.
As for Auckland... It is true that Auckland is the only city in New Zealand and at least 1/3 of the entire population lives in Auckland. Anyway... Auckland presently has... I don't know how many district health boards. Waitemata. Auckland city. Manakau... There will be others. So they will be scrapped...
Let's see... Where are the teaching placemetns... The 'streams'...
Northland. They send the Maori kids up there. We didn't need to have a 'rural bonded scholarship' where students ELECTED to work rural communities on graduation. We just force our workers to do what they are told otherwise they are thrown to the scrap heap of 'no job for you then'. You might think it's a case of streaming the Maori into the jobs nobody else wants. You might think it is racism. But New Zealand doesnt' believe in such things... It's an education trainng camp. Medical School. Clearly.
So Northland is one. ANd they are going Auckland / northland as one region. So Auckland is going to need to get it's sh*t together.
Which basically gives Otago permission to...
